Back in 2022, we learned that Apple and Tom Hanks were eager to get moving on a sequel to Greyhound, the WWII naval thriller released in 2020. Well, it’s taken a bit more time than expected, but that film is official with shooting to begin next January.
Deadline confirms that the untitled Greyhound sequel is happening, with Hanks returning to star as Captain Ernest Krause as the USS Keeling takes part in the Normandy invasion and the Pacific Theater.
Aaron Schneider is returning to direct, joined by producer Gary Goetzman as part of Hanks’ Playtone banner. Hanks and Goetzman signed an exclusive multi-picture deal with Apple, building off previous successes Finch and Masters of the Air. The hope is that other supporting characters from the first film will return, including Adolescence star Stephen Graham.
Greyhound (review here) starred Hanks as inexperienced U.S. Navy commander Captain Krause who is tasked with leading an Allied convoy being pursued by a German submarine wolfpack.
What will be interesting now is to see if Apple gives it a theatrical release. Back in 2020, Sony Pictures had the film but, that being pandemic time, sold the rights to Apple who gave Greyhound a streaming release. It was definitely a film designed for the big screen and so let’s see if the sequel heads there.
