The SAG Awards, now known as The Actor Awards, are a very good precursor for the Academy Awards, and if you care about TV, the Emmys, too. That means things are looking up for Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, which not only won Outstanding Ensemble Cast, but Michael B. Jordan pulled off a huge “upset” with the Lead Actor win.
That’s right, Michael B. Jordan beat the presumed favorite, Timothee Chalamet, whose performance in Marty Supreme has been the talk of awards season. But this, as well as the BAFTA loss to Robert Aramayo for I Swear, has people wondering whether if that’s the case anymore. I don’t know if Jordan is now the Oscar frontrunner, but he’s gotta be up there.
Jessie Buckley continued her Critics’ Choice, Golden Globes, and BAFTA streak, winning Lead Actress for Hamnet. No shock there. The Best Actress category is perhaps the surest thing on Oscar night.
Also, Sean Penn won Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another. Amy Madigan threw a monkeywrench in the works by winning Supporting Actress for Weapons. She’s now definitely in the mix to win, perhaps even a frontrunner, over Teyana Taylor for One Battle After Another and Wunmi Mosaku for Sinners.
