Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua’s The Equalizer franchise has been remarkably consistent, with the three action movies earning about $190M apiece. While the third film, released in 2023, seemed like the end of Robert McCall’s story as he found peace in Italy, it seems that he’s still got more justice to mete out.
Speaking with Esquire, Denzel confirmed that not one but two more Equalizer movies are on the way.
“I told [Sony] I would do another Equalizer, and we’re doing four and five. I’ve come to realize that the Equalizer films are for me, too, because they’re for the people. They want me to go get the bad guys. ‘We can’t get them, so you go get them.’ And I say, Okay, I’ll get them! Just wait right there. I’ll be right back!”
The Equalizer films have taken on a life of their own after being inspired by the 1980s TV series. Denzel plays Robert McCall, a former Marine and DIA agent who has attempted to make up for a dark past by helping those who can’t help themselves. This means using his specialized training to violently take down criminals, from low-level thugs to entire criminal empires.
Fuqua has directed each of the Equalizer movies and presumably would return for more. Who turns down a shot to work with Denzel? These films are clearly a passion project for the actor, and as long as he wants to do them, they’ll keep coming.
