It just feels good to see Spike Lee and Denzel Washington working together again. It’s been way too long of a wait for the duo who have now done five movies together, with the latest, Highest 2 Lowest, premiering at Cannes this month. But first, A24 has a new teaser for the film, a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic, High and Low.
Denzel stars as a music mogul who gets wrapped up in a ransom plot that puts him in a moral dilemma. Backed by the sounds of James Brown’s “The Payback”, the teaser doesn’t reveal much but it’s clear this will be a new take on Kurosawa’s film and not a straight remake.
Washington previously starred in Lee’s films Mo Better Blues, Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Inside Man.
Also in the Highest 2 Lowest cast are Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, and A$AP Rocky. Lee directs from a script by William Alan Fox.
SYNOPSIS: When a titan music mogul (Washington), widely known as having the “best ears in the business”, is targeted with a ransom plot, he is jammed up in a life-or-death moral dilemma. Brothers Denzel Washington and Spike Lee reunite for the 5th in their long working relationship for a reinterpretation of the great filmmaker Akira Kurosawa’s crime thriller “High & Low,” now played out on the mean streets of modern-day New York City.
A24 will release Highest 2 Lowest theatrically on August 22nd, before moving to Apple TV+ on September 5th.
