Wait, I thought fans showed they no longer cared about The Matrix when The Matrix Resurrections failed to make much of a mark in 2021. I mean, does anybody even remember that movie at this point? But Warner Bros., who long ago planned to keep the franchise going with or without the Wachowskis’ involvement, are trucking right along with a fifth movie. And for the first time, it won’t be one of the Wachowskis behind the camera.
Deadline reports that fan-favorite filmmaker Drew Goddard will write and direct The Matrix 5. There will continue to be a Wachowski connection, though, which is a good thing. Lana Wachowski will stay aboard as an exec-producer, having co-directed the original trilogy and solo directed ‘Resurrections’.
Goddard is best known for his directorial debut The Cabin in the Woods and for creating Marvel’s Daredevil series on Netflix. He’s also written films Cloverfield, World War Z, and The Martian, while directing Bad Times at the El Royale. He’s been attached to multiple comic book projects that have yet to pan out, including a Sinister Six movie and an X-Force film.
Left up in the air is whether Goddard’s Matrix movie will see the return of Keanu Reeves and the rest of the original cast. A lot of questions are still out there, and hopefully we’ll get some answers soon.
