Patricia Highsmith’s “Thomas Ripley” novels have been adapted numerous times on the big and small screen. The one that most people remember is 1999’s The Talented Mr. Ripley with Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. I mean, with that cast who could forget it? Ripley, a new series adaptation coming to Netflix from Oscar-winning writer/director Steve Zaillian (Schindler’s List), debuts next month and it features quite a cast, as well.
Ripley stars Fleabag and All of Us Strangers actor Andrew Scott as Thomas Ripley, an American grifter in Europe who lies, cheats, manipulates, and murders his way into the lives of the wealthy. Also in the cast are Dakota Fanning, Johnny Flynn, Eliot Sumner, Maurizio Lombardi, Margherita Buy, and John Malkovich who played Thomas Ripley in 2002’s Ripley’s Game.
Here’s the synopsis: Tom Ripley (Scott), a grifter scraping by in early 1960s New York, is hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy to try to convince his vagabond son to return home. Tom’s acceptance of the job is the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud, and murder. The drama series is based on Patricia Highsmith’s bestselling Tom Ripley novels.
Netflix debuts Ripley on April 4th and runs for eight episodes, all written and directed by Zaillian.
