‘Humane’ First Look: Caitlin Cronenberg’s Dystopian Satire Hits Theaters In April

It should surprise nobody that the children of David Cronenberg are following in dad’s footsteps. Brandon Cronenberg has long established his cred with horror films such as Antiviral and Infinity Pool, along with the brilliant mature spy thriller Possessor. And now his sister, Caitlin Cronenberg, gets to show what she can do with the dark satire, Humane, which we learned about in 2022 and are now getting our first looks at.

IFC Films and Shudder announced today that they have acquired distribution of Humane, Cronenberg’s feature directorial debut, for theatrical release on April 26th. Shot in Hamilton, Ontario, the dystopian satire “stars Jay Baruchel (Blackberry), Emily Hampshire (Schitt’s Creek) and Peter Gallagher (Grace and Frankie) in a dystopian satire taking place over a single day, mere months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program. But when the father’s plan goes horribly awry, tensions flare and chaos erupts among his children.”

Cronenberg directed the film from a script by Victory Man Productions’ Michael Sparaga.

Here’s what Cronenberg had to say about the news: “It’s thrilling that my directorial debut is being released by IFC Films and Shudder, two of the most fearless and supportive distributors out there. Scott Shooman and his team have such a keen understanding of horror films, and are the perfect partners to bring this genre-bending film to audiences.”
