‘Next Goal Wins’ Trailer: Michael Fassbender Leads An Underdog Soccer Team In Taika Waititi’s Sports Comedy

It’s been a long time coming, but the trailer for Taika Waititi’s soccer comedy Next Goal Wins is finally here. The long-awaited film, which finished shooting two years ago, stars Michael Fassbender as real-life soccer coach Thomas Rongen, who is charged with turning around the terrible American Samoa national football squad into World Cup contenders.

Waititi also co-wrote the script with Iain Morris, based on the 2014 documentary of the same name. Also in the cast alongside Fassbender are Elisabeth Moss, Oscar Knightley, Rhys Darby, Rachel House, David Fane, Beulah Koale, Uli Latukefu, and Angus Sampson. Will Arnett joined during reshoots in 2021, replacing Armie Hammer who was…busy.

Basically, this looks like Ted Lasso meets Cool Runnings, and that could be an award-winning combination. Clearly, Searchlight Pictures thinks so, hence the November 17th release date.
