‘Eternals 2’: Barry Keoghan Turns To Kumail Nanjiani For Sequel Updates But Hasn’t Heard Anything

Eternals holds the unfortunate distinction of being the only Marvel movie with a “rotten” score on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a shame because I don’t think it’s necessarily deserved. Director Chloe Zhao took some big, bold swings and they all didn’t work out, but I generally believe that ambition should be rewarded. Anyway, a post-credits scene teased future sequels, and Patton Oswalt, who appeared in that scene as Pip the Troll, seemed to confirm one was happening. However, Marvel has yet to make an announcement, and cast member Barry Keoghan hasn’t heard a word.

Keoghan, who played Druig in Eternals, told Uproxx that he hasn’t heard anything about a sequel and turns to co-star Kumail Nanjiani for that kind of info…

Kumail is always the one I’m texting. I’m like, ‘Yo, have you heard anything on ‘Eternals 2’?’ Kumail knows everything. You know what I mean? He loves comic books. The comic world. They’re secretly giving you all the information, and you’re just not telling Kumail. Maybe that’s what’s actually going on here. Well, I’m always texting him like about San Diego Comic-Con. I’m like, ‘Hey, are we going to San Diego for ‘Eternals’?’ but I’d love to see where it goes. I really would.”

Eternals was released at a difficult time for theatrical in 2021. Marvel released three films that year, including Black Widow and Shang-Chi, and none of them cracked $450M worldwide. I wouldn’t hold that against any of those films because the pandemic was still raging, but Eternals also has the lukewarm critical response. That said, it does set up future stories and Marvel is unlikely to just let that drop for good.

Keoghan will be seen next in an extraordinary performance as part of Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin which opens on October 21st.
