Does it feel like you’ve been watching trailers for Minions: The Rise of Gru for years? Well, you have. The sequel to 2015’s Minions (which made $1.1B by the way) should’ve opened in summer of 2020, but was delayed because of you-know-what. It’ll be interesting to see if those crazy yellow buggers and the Despicable Me franchise as a whole still has the same popularity it once had when it was a cultural phenomenon.
The sequel is set in the 1970s and follows a young, pre-supervillain Gru (once again voiced by Steve Carell) who longs to become a member of The Vicious 6, a team of baddies, only to end up their mortal enemy.
This is the fifth movie in the Despicable Me franchise and probably could’ve been part of the core series rather than a Minions spinoff. But Gru is nowhere to be found in this footage. It’s just the Minions making airline passengers’ lives very chaotic!
Also in the voice cast are Taraji P. Henson, Russell Brand, Alan Arkin, Michelle Yeoh, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Lucy Lawless, Dolph Lundgren, Danny Trejo, Julie Andrews, and RZA.
Minions: The Rise of Gru opens July 1st.
