‘Ms. Marvel’ Trailer: Superpowers And Teen Angst Collide In Marvel’s Charming New Disney+ Series

The arrival of Ms. Marvel to Disney+ is a pretty big deal. As the first major Muslim superhero in Marvel Comics, there was a lot of potential for her to crash and burn, but you know what makes Kamala Khan so great? She’s a fan like the rest of us. And that spirit, of just plain loving superheroes, is all over the place in the series’ trailer which looks like a combination of high-flying action, teen angst, and a whole lot of fun.

Iman Vellani stars as Kamala Khan, whose adoration of Captain Marvel leads to her getting powers of her own, the ability to “embiggen” parts of her body sortof like Reed Richards. And of course, she wants to emulate her hero and protect the people of Jersey City who are under supervillain threat.

But there’s also the classic turmoil at home. Kamala doesn’t fit in with her Muslim family, who wish she were more traditional and not as American-ized. She’s also something of a pariah at school because of her unabashed love of superheroes. But we all know this will lead to an eventual meeting with her idol, plus Monica Rambeau, in the upcoming film The Marvels.

Also in the cast are Aramis Knight, Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Matt Lintz, Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Nakli, Azhar Usman, Travina Springer, and Nimra Bucha. Adil El Arbi & Bilall Fallah, Meera Menon, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directed the series episodes.

Ms. Marvel has been given a June 8th release date on Disney+.

Marvel Studios’ “Ms. Marvel” is a new, original series that introduces Kamala Khan, a Muslim American teenager growing up in Jersey City. An avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, Kamala is a Super Hero mega fan with an oversized imagination—particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel. Yet Kamala feels like she doesn’t fit in at school and sometimes even at home—that is, until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life gets better with super powers, right?
