Steven Spielberg To Direct New ‘Bullitt’ Movie From ‘Spotlight’ Writer

With his latest West Side Story racking up a ton of Oscar nominations, Steven Spielberg is already looking down the line. And it’ll be another take on an established classic, this time the 1968 Steve McQueen classic, Bullitt.

Variety reports Spielberg will develop and direct a new movie based on the Frank Bullitt character, the San Francisco cop played by McQueen in the 1968 movie. This is still very early days, with writer Josh Singer (Spotlight) working on the script for what will be an original story, not a remake. Spielberg will also produce alongside regular collaborator Kristie Macosko Krieger, while McQueen’s son Chad McQueen and granddaughter Molly McQueen are executive producing.

The original movie was based on the book Mute Witness by Robert L. Pike, and found Lt. Frank Bullitt investigating a murdered mob informant that he was supposed to protect. The Bullitt character is arguably the role McQueen became known for, especially due to his manning the wheel throughout one of the best car chases in movie history.

Next up for Spielberg is his semi-autobiographical film, The Fabelmans, which opens in November.
