Joss Whedon is making his long-awaited return to TV with HBO’s The Nevers, a Victorian-era series that seems to be doubling as a superhero show. There has been a lot of talk about it over the last few months, but it has remained shrouded in mystery until the arrival of this new teaser.
Starring Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Rochelle Neil, Eleanor Tomlinson, Amy Manson, Pip Torrens, Denis O’Hare, Zackary Momoh, Elizabeth Berrington, Kiran Sawar, Anna Devlin, Viola Prettejohn, Ella Smith, Nick Frost, and Ben Chaplin, The Nevers is a six-episode series about “Touched” people who exhibit powerful superhuman abilities. Most of these are women, and they use their powers to fight for those who have no place in the world.
They sound like a Victorian-era version of the X-Men, and I’m here for it.
That said, The Nevers has been the subject of controversy because of Whedon’s involvement which was to include showrunner. However, he left/was fired/whatever from that gig for what Ray Fisher says were repercussions from his Justice League behavior. Still, a series from Whedon is going to have a lot of eyeballs and pretty high expectations.
The Nevers comes to HBO and HBO Max this April.
HBO’s new drama series THE NEVERS will debut this April with six-episodes on HBO and will be available to stream on HBO Max. In the last years of Victoria’s reign, London is beset by the “Touched”: people – mostly women – who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities – some charming, some very disturbing. Among them are Amalia True (Laura Donnelly), a mysterious, quick-fisted widow, and Penance Adair (Ann Skelly), a brilliant young inventor. They are the champions of this new underclass, making a home for the Touched, while fighting the forces of… well, pretty much all the forces – to make room for those whom history as we know it has no place.
