Review: ‘They Cloned Tyrone’

John Boyega, Jamie Foxx, And Teyonah Parris Uncover A 'Hood Conspiracy In Juel Taylor's Brilliant Genre-Bending Satire

THEY CLONED TYRONE- Pimps, clones, conspiracies, existential crisis; Juel Taylor’s directorial debut is a lot to take in, but it’s also the most fun movie of the summer and one of Netflix’s best this year. A sci-fi mystery with a heavy dose of jive-talkin’ blaxploitation, the film features go-for-broke performances by the unbeatable trio of John Boyega, Teyonah Parris, and Jamie Foxx who quietly had the best year of his career since winning the Oscar for Ray.

Juel Taylor has set an impossibly high bar for his feature-length directorial debut, the genre-bending Netflix film They Cloned Tyrone. It’s not often one can say that a film combines the best of blaxploitation with the satirical insight of Robert Townsend and the social consciousness of Jordan Peele, Boots Riley, and Donald Glover, but that’s what Taylor has done with this hilarious look at an oddball threesome who uncover a vast government conspiracy led by, who else, The Man.

The fictional neighborhood known as The Glen could’ve been ripped right out of Menace II SocietyFriday, or many other films from the ’90s that sought to capture what Black life was like in the inner city. It’s here that we meet Fontaine (John Boyega), a no-nonsense drug dealer whose life is a common routine of hustling, lifting weights, buying liquor at the corner market, and jackin’ up anybody who gets in his way.  That is until he pisses off the wrong guy and gets murdered, shot dead in the street, only to reawaken the next day completely unaware of what happened. He goes about his typical day, until those who actually saw him get shot, the ridiculously-pompadoured pimp Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx) and his most loyal prostitute Yo-Yo (Teyonah Parris), freak out at his return.

One of the many joys of They Cloned Tyrone is that it’s never just one thing.  While starting out a bit dark and grim, it isn’t long before mystery sets in and it steers into sci-fi territory, while also poking fun at the tools used to hold Black people down from reaching their full potential. The first time you see a commercial of Black people dancing wildly over a bucket of fried chicken, you’re already in full-blown blaxploitation mode.  Liquor, hair products, and hip-hop music are also deployed to keep the people of The Glen vulnerable and stuck in this place where nothing changes and nobody ever leaves.

In the midst of all this, They Cloned Tyrone keeps you off-balance with its humor. Slick Rick, Yo-Yo, and Fontaine are such unique, wonderful characters that they are a blast to watch together. Neither Rick or Yo-Yo can ever shut up, with him dropping movie references and her pretending to be the next Nancy Drew, which comes in handy when they launch their offbeat investigation. I can’t stress just how much fun Slick Rick and Yo-Yo are together, highlighted by a scene on an elevator when they break into an impromptu rendition of Mary J. Blige’s “I’m Going Down”.

Fontaine is a bruiser, and a mopey one at that, but we come to see the tragic circumstances that have led him to be who he is. While the film often threatens to get too bizarre, Boyega’s performance as Fontaine is what keeps it steady and somewhat grounded. Fontaine represents every Black man who has let tragedy drag him down to becoming someone he never was meant to be. In a place as hopeless as The Glen, it’s easier to just go with the flow and get through the day.

Meanwhile, white people stroll around like they own the place, which they kinda do. The jokes at their expense pinpoint how bland their culture really is, which is why they appropriate it from others. In one great moment that one could easily miss, a pair of white-suited scientists discuss how flavorful boiled chicken with no seasoning really is. The only thing that’s missing is a joke about raisins in the potato salad.

Taylor, who also co-wrote the screenplay, isn’t afraid to push this already-crazy story to the edge, effectively introducing horror elements, gun battles, and a surprising twist at the conclusion. While at just over two hours there could have been some trimming down, I wouldn’t want it if it meant reducing the amount of time we get to spend with Fontaine, Slick Charles, and Yo-Yo. This makeshift band of urban gumshoes help make They Cloned Tyrone the must-see Netflix movie of the summer. Taylor’s future is a bright one, and hopefully we won’t have to wait long to see what comes next.

They Cloned Tyrone is in select theaters now, and streams on Netflix beginning July 21st.

‘Command Z’: Steven Soderbergh’s Sci-Fi Series With Michael Cera Is Available Now

Leave it to Steven Soderbergh to do some experimental stuff that people weren’t prepared for. Last night at the Metrograph in New York, he debuted a new dystopian sci-fi series, Command Z, starring Michael Cera, JJ Maley, Roy Wood, Jr. and Chloe Radcliffe.

The 90-minute series is available to stream now at Soderbergh’s website, CommandZseries.com, and is influenced by Kurt Andersen’s book Evil Geniuses: The Unmaking of America: A Recent History.

Cera’s giant head plays a deceased billionaire who tasks three people, all wearing matching blue jumpsuits, with going back in time to July 17th 2023 to convince titans of industry not to screw up the world. Things get really weird when the trio must drink a psychedelic substance while staring into a washing machine while the movie theme from Mahogany plays, all before taking a wormhole into the past. Their targets include familiar faces such as Liev Schreiber as a greedy financier and Succession‘s Zoë Winters as a liberal obsessed with nuclear power.

The eight total episodes, which makes it sound like a movie broken up into pieces, were penned by Andersen and The Simpsons writer Larry Doyle, along with Wood, Radcliffe, and more.

For Soderbergh, this marks his third project already this year following Magic Mike’s Last Dance and the MAX series Full Circle.

*SPOILERS* New ‘Secret Invasion’ Trailer Prepares Us For An Epic Final Two Episodes

With just two episodes of Secret Invasion remaining, Marvel has dropped a new teaser for what looks to be one Hell of a finish. The footage shows Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) in the fight of his life against Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) and a shapeshifting Skrull force poised to take over the planet. BEWARE OF MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!

In the previous episode, we learned that James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle), who gleefully fired Fury from his job, is actually a Skrull in deep cover. It’s unclear just how long Rhodey hasn’t been himself. Nor do we know what the implications are for the Avengers, who are basically scattered at this point. We see Fury and this version of Rhodey in a heated confrontation.

This footage also shows us that Gravik is using some new Super-Skrull powers. We’ve already seen him use the Extremis to heal himself, as well as Groot’s abilities. He appears to be using something taken from the Hulk, or possibly Cull Obsidian since he was teased some weeks ago.

The penultimate episode of Secret Invasion hits Disney+ this Wednesday!

‘The Holdovers’ Trailer: Alexander Payne Reunites With Paul Giamatti In 1970s Holiday Dramedy

It’s taken nearly a decade, but Alexander Payne and Paul Giamatti are together again. The Sideways duo have reunited for the period dramedy The Holdovers, Payne’s first film since 2017’s Downsizing.

Starring Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, and Dominic Sessa, the ’70s-set film centers on a grumpy teacher at a New England prep school asked to stay behind over Christmas break to watch over some students. He forges an unlikely bond with one of them, as well as the school cook who has just lost a son in Vietnam.

Payne is quite familiar with stories about makeshift families, always finding the humor and dramatic depth in their unusual bonds. David Hemingson wrote the screenplay.

The trailer uses a ’70s aesthetic that has it resembling an old school sitcom. A clever way to set this film apart as these kinds of low-key stories tend to get overlooked nowadays.

Here’s the official synopsis: From acclaimed director Alexander Payne, THE HOLDOVERS follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them — a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) — and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).

The Holdovers opens in select theaters on November 3rd before going wide a week later.

‘The Monkey King’ Trailer: Jimmy O. Yang Voices The Legendary Chinese Myth For Netflix This August

Some stories have been around for decades and adapted dozens of times, each attempting to find something new to say or a different interpretation. But in the case of Netflix’s The Monkey King, the animated film is based on a Chinese myth that is literally centuries old. Fortunately, this legendary tale looks brand new in the hands of director Anthony Stacchi, whose previous work on The Boxtrolls earned him acclaim.

Featuring the voices of Jimmy O. Yang, Bowen Yang, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Jo Koy, Ron Yuan, Hoon Lee, Stephanie Hsu, and BD Wong, The Monkey King follows the charismatic and rebellious monkey who uses his magical fighting stick to save the land from demons, the Dragon King, all while battling his own enormous ego.

The vibrant animation and visuals are from ReelFX (Scoob!), while Stephen Chow, known for Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle, is aboard as exec-producer. One can imagine he had a lot of input on the Monkey King’s wisecracking persona.

Here’s the synopsis: The Monkey King is an action-packed family comedy that follows a rebellious and charismatic Monkey and his magical fighting Stick on an epic quest for victory over 100 demons, an eccentric Dragon King, and Monkey’s greatest foe of all —his own ego! Along the way, a young village girl challenges his self-centered attitude and shows him that even the smallest pebble can have a big effect on the world.

The Monkey King hits Netflix on August 18th.

‘The Creator’ Trailer: John David Washington Defends Mankind Against Evil AI In Gareth Edwards’ Return Film

Welcome back, Gareth Edwards. You have been missed. Seven years after Edwards directed Rogue One, the filmmaker is back with an ambitious sci-fi project, The Creator, that has largely flown under the radar. But after the teaser released a couple of months ago, and today’s trailer, the secret is definitely out and this film looks very impressive.

Like Mission: Impossible-Dead Reckoning, it’s another story dealing with the dangers of AI. John David Washington leads The Creator cast, playing a soldier tasked with infiltrating the base of a rogue AI that has taken over the world with a secret weapon to destroy humanity. But what happens when the soldier realizes the secret weapon is…a kid?

Also in the cast are Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Allison Janney, Sturgill Simpson, and newcomer Madeleine Yuna Voyles, with a screenplay by Edwards and fellow Rogue One writer Chris Weitz.

Here’s the official synopsis: Amidst a future war between the human race and the forces of artificial intelligence, Joshua (Washington), a hardened ex-special forces agent grieving the disappearance of his wife (Chan), is recruited to hunt down and kill the Creator, the elusive architect of advanced AI who has developed a mysterious weapon with the power to end the war… and mankind itself. Joshua and his team of elite operatives journey across enemy lines, into the dark heart of AI-occupied territory… only to discover the world-ending weapon he’s been instructed to destroy is an AI in the form of a young child.

The Creator opens in theaters on September 29th.

A Surprising Villain Strikes In New ‘Blue Beetle’ Clip

Blue Beetle

Blue Beetle arrives in almost exactly one month, and a brief clip has arrived that shows he’ll be facing a villain very familiar to DC Comics readers. The scene shows Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) being blasted through a wall, only to emerge unharmed thanks to the alien suit of armor he’s wearing.

That’s when the extraterrestrial Scarab warns him that OMAC is incoming, and we see the tech-based villain charging his way. To the best of my knowledge, we did not know OMAC was in the movie until now.

While there are different versions of OMAC that are connected in different ways, this one is a cyborg, a human who has been transformed by a nano-virus and tasked with killing all metahumans.

Reyes is expected to be part of James Gunn’s DCU following the release of Superman: Legacy. Just how big a role he plays will likely depend on how Blue Beetle performs when it opens on August 18th.

‘Superman: Legacy’: James Gunn Explains Why There Are So Many Superheroes

The casting of James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy has been a little confusing for fans. While David Corenswet as Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane are to be expected, it’s the surprising additions of Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, and most recently Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho that has some asking if this is secretly a team-up movie, or just a set up for future DCU movies.

Well, Gunn has the answer, and it’s actually pretty simple. The characters are there to help tell Superman’s story.  Gunn said via Threads

“I’ve never used one movie to set up another movie. The characters are there because they help tell Superman’s story better, not so we can set up separate projects in the franchise. Superman and Lois are the very clear protagonists.”

Fans of superheroes are used to a certain way of storytelling, where each film exists to launch spinoffs and sequels. While this strategy has worked for Marvel, it hasn’t worked so great elsewhere, with the DCEU a prime example. Putting the cart before the horse is never a good idea.

Gunn continued by reminding fans that Superman: Legacy bucks the trend in another way. This is no Man of Steel origin story.  When the story begins, superheroes are already well-established in the world.

“We’re entering a world where superheroes exist and have existed for quite a while,” wrote Gunn. “They’re a part of one side of his world just like Lois and Jimmy are a part of another.”

This is going to be a huge test for Gunn to see if he can turn things around. The pitiful performance of The Flash hangs heavy, especially with all of Gunn’s praise for it. I maintain that Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel was a perfectly good starting point for the DCEU, but his choices afterward killed it. Gunn is taking a very different approach and that’s wise, but what matters is how he builds out from Superman: Legacy after it opens on July 11th 2025.

‘Harley Quinn’ Flashes Her Assets In NSFW Promo Ahead Of Season Four Return

I don’t know if Warner Bros. Discovery realizes they’ve struck gold with Harley Quinn. Perhaps they have because the wildly explicit, raunch animated series is coming back for a fourth season of crazy adventures in the DC Universe. And a new NSFW teaser shows just how much Harley is willing to…reveal about herself.

The very brief promo is introduced by Harley, “It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s motherf*ckin’ Harley Quinn!”  Later, we see Harley lifting up her shirt and flashing her tits, moments after feigning concern for any kids who might be watching. The shot is censored but still, it’s the thought that counts. And there’s still quite a bit of foul language here, so probably don’t watch it at work.

This follows a recent poster that features Harley, Poison Ivy, Clayface, and King Shark riding a very phallic missile.

Before the new season hits MAX on July 27th, you can also check out a recap of season three. It’s worth a revisit!

Harley Quinn is one of the classic characters in DC Comics. Many people like her cartoon image: the iconic twin tails, sexy tights and baseball bat in hand. To further express our love for Harley Quinn, we can design our favorite character into Custom Vinyl Stickers and decorate personal items with these colorful stickers. Everything you love about her can be design elements. Harley Quinn stickers will also add crazy properties to your items.
