Most Likely to Murder tells the story of Billy (Adam Pally), a popular kid in high school who
moved away from his hometown to live in Las Vegas. A lot can change in the years after graduation and Billy is about to find that out the hard way. Billy comes home for Thanksgiving expecting to
pick up right where he left off. The cast of characters from his high school years
is the same, but they have all seemingly moved on with their lives and grown up
while Billy is still trying to relive his glory days – so much so that he
refers to himself as the ‘King’ of their school. Even though Billy has moved
away, he still hasn’t gotten over his ex-girlfriend Kara (Rachel Bloom) and
reaches out to her periodically with messages oozing of desperation.
One of the first stops that Billy
makes when getting back into town is to meet up with his old friend Duane (co-writer
Doug Mand) and head to the local bar to reclaim his throne in front of his old
high school classmates. Instead, it starts to become crystal clear that Billy
may not be as cool as he thinks he is. On top of that, Kara is now dating Billy’s
creepy neighbor Lowell (Vincent Kartheiser). Billy responds as any level headed
adult would, he gets hammered. That night, Billy goes home and sees Lowell
acting incredibly strange – shirtless and screaming and throwing away mysterious
items in the wee hours of the night. The next morning Billy wakes up to see
paramedics wheeling a body out of Lowell’s house and into an ambulance – this has
to be a coincidence though…right?
Most Likely to Murder is a silly and offbeat murder mystery. It
never commits to being a comedy or a crime film which leaves it lacking in both
categories. Dan Gregor, who co-wrote and directed, and cowriter Mand do succeed
in highlighting the chemistry between the cast. Everyone plays off of each
other which helps drive the film forward. There are a small handful of
memorable scenes throughout, especially the annual Thanksgiving football game
and some great scenes with 90s references, but these scenes are few and far
between. Gregor and Mand manage to cleverly weave in high school interactions
that Billy had with classmates into the present – it’s great to see Billy desperately
trying to prove a murder to the Police, but the local officer can only fixate
on an alleged sex tape that Billy may have made in high school with his wife. Most Likely to Murder is a decent movie
that is fairly unique. The film won’t blow your socks off, but is worth a watch
to see some of the absurd moments that Billy and the other misfit cast of characters find themselves in. For all you know, Most
Likely to Murder might have you questioning your own high school
superlatives.
Remember when The Fast and the Furious was just another movie about the LA street racing scene? Now the franchise is about cars, family, and exotic locales. Fast & Furious 9 promises to have all three, and yesterday while helping to introduce the new Fast & Furious ride at Universal Orlando, Vin Diesel teased the movie’s location while re-confirming a key member of the family’s return.
“They asked me specifically, please do not divulge what happens in 9. But I get so excited… and I start talking about it out of excitement. It’s like spilling the beans. I can say there are a few locations we’ve been wanting to travel, and one of them is Africa…. The thing I’m most excited about is the fact that we are finally going to catch up to Mia Toretto in the ninth chapter. And I’m sure if you’re smart, you can tell what all of that implies. It’s a very positive component to this next one.”
Africa, really? Wonder if they’ll make a stop over in Wakanda? The news about Jordana Brewster’s return has been teased by Diesel before so it’s not that surprising, but it does leave me wondering how they’ll reintroduce her to the group. And what does it mean for Paul Walker’s Brian O’Connor, who had his chance to ride off into the sunset? Mia coming back suggests something has happened to him that she needs the team for.
Diesel also re-confirmed prior reports that Justin Lin, who directed four previous Fast & Furious movies, would return for nine and ten. Some expect the tenth film to be the end of the road but The Fate of the Furious grossed $1.2B, and the franchise is only expanding with the Hobbs & Shaw spinoff arriving next year. It’s because of that film Fast & Furious 9 has been delayed until 2020.
It’s been five years since Dwayne Johnson enlisted for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and his addition to the sequel gave the franchise a mild boost, but nothing huge. A third film has been in the works ever since but Paramount has never made it a priority. They’re still moving forward, though, setting a release date for March 27th 2020, and *shocker*, they want their big guy back.
The easy part of this rumor from The Hashtag Show is that Paramount wants Dwayne Johnson to reprise his role as Roadblock in the film. The heavier lift is the apparent title, G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant, which Paramount has not confirmed. We’ll have to wait and see if it’s true and we probably won’t know until production draws closer.
Mission: Impossible-Ghost Protocol writers Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec are working on the script, which should set the film within Paramount and Hasbro’s shared cinematic universe with ROM, MASK, Visionaries, and Micronauts.
“The film is set to see Johnson’s Roadblock, who first appeared in 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation, assemble a new team of Joes to stop terrorists from launching a dark matter WMD that will turn their targets to dust!
The site then goes on to guess who Roadblock will invite to be part of the G.I. Joe roster, as well as some possible villains they will face. It’s all speculation and doesn’t amount to much, and the video is unwatchable like most of the site’s stuff is, but it’s here if you want to check it out.
Last week had a face-off between Oliver and Diaz, and thanks to Diaz cheating with a knife, it didn’t go too well for Oliver. At the ends of their fight, Diaz had his crooked cops arrest him to spearhead his Green Arrow trial. This week on Arrow, we get the trial of Oliver Queen.
The episode starts seemingly with a flashback to Diggle parachuting down in enemy territory. Being the badass he is, we get to see Diggle pretty much be a one-man army as he storms the enemy encampment, shooting his way through dozens of enemy fighters. After gunning pretty much everyone down, he reaches his goal. His target: Christopher Chance, AKA The Human Target. Chance, has been seen previously on Arrow working for both the Bratva as well as with Team Arrow. Thanks to Diggle, he’s free from imprisonment and owes him a favor.
Oliver is getting ready for his trial and is surprisingly upbeat. His lawyer tells him to pump his breaks as the judge is in Diaz’s pocket, meaning he’s probably not going to get a fair trial. To make matter worse, they are not using their usual prosecutor but bringing in a cutthroat lawyer names Alexa Van Owen (guest starring The Shield’s Catherine Dent, who’s also making a killing it on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D). While she’s not in Diaz’s pocket, she has a 90% conviction rate. If there’s something to find out, she’ll find it. Van Owen offers Oliver a plea deal, meaning he would serve 15 years behind bars. If found guilty, all bets are off. Oliver doesn’t want a plea deal, he wants an acquittal. It’s off to trial we go.
Renee (now without last week’s PTSD), is trying to strategize with Dinah as to what they are going to say since they are both served a subpoena to testify against Oliver. Renee thinks that pleading the fifth amendment is the best course of action. Of course, this means that could also be arrested under suspicion of being vigilantes themselves. Curtis isn’t sweating it, because he’s managed to conceal his secret identity as Mr. Terrific and is under no suspicion. Quentin Lance, now the mayor is giving an interview with the press where he maintains Oliver’s innocence, even citing that he arrested and gave Oliver a lie detector way back when and Oliver was proven innocent. Just then, Earth-2 Lauren comes to see him and a reporter asks her (since “she” was already outed as the Black Canary) if she knows that Oliver is the Green Arrow. She tells the reporter that she knows who the Green Arrow is, and if subpoenaed, she will tell who the Green Arrow is. She tells her dimensional adoptive father that Diaz is out of control. He tells her she should stand up to him.
As the trial commences, most of Team Arrow testifies on Oliver’s behalf. Diggle, Dinah, Renee, even the local doctor ass testifies. Things first seem to work in Oliver’s favor. But remember, Van Owen’s a shark. She gets Dinah to plead the fifth when she attacks her credibility, citing when she killed Sean Sonus. When Renee takes the stand, he first stands tall for Oliver, but then Diaz walks into the room with his daughter having the necessary leverage on him. Even Oliver realizes that he has to do what Diaz wants and admits that Oliver is the Green Arrow, so now it’s not looking too good for Oliver. Diggle and Dinah confront Diaz after outside the courthouse and are even willing to reveal themselves to stop him, only for all off Diaz’s cops to pull their guns on them. It’s not looking good for Oliver.
Felicity takes the stand and testifies as an expert witness in computer forensics that the doctored photo of Oliver as the Green Arrow was in fact, doctored. However, Van Owen manages to bring up Felicity’s father and how she didn’t know he was a criminal hacker, meaning that she couldn’t know if a loved one is a criminal, throwing out her credibility. Next Oliver takes the stand. He does his best to answer her questions to make himself look in a good position. She then brings up his time in Russia when he was supposed to be in Lian Yu, where Oliver is forced to admit that he wasn’t on the dangerous island the whole time, throwing his credibility to the wind.
Just then, The Green Arrow appears.
Crashing through a sunroof in the courtroom (who knew there would be sunroofs?), The “Green Arrow” appears. When the mask is taken off Tommy Merlyn (guest starring Colin Donnell) appears. “Tommy” testifies that he faked his own death and has been the Green Arrow all these years. He was coming forward because he didn’t want Oliver to go to jail on his behalf. The judge then orders Tommy’s arrest. He tells them that his team will break him out anyway. Just as he predicted, Renee and Diggle beat of the corrupt cops that were taking him to Diaz and the three escape. He then pulls his mask off to reveal himself as the Human Target wearing a disguise.
Laurel takes the stand as Diaz ordered her to. However, she instead, tells the courtroom that Tommy is the Green Arrow, not Oliver. Both the prosecution and the defense make their closing arguments. Oliver prepares for the worst. The jury didn’t deliberate long and Oliver is found guilty. However, the judge makes a reversal and allows Oliver to go free. Turns out, Diggle and Renee had Chris Chance use his Human Target skills to impersonate the judge to get Oliver freed. This doesn’t go well for the judge as Diaz kills him later on. Shortly after, Earth-2 Laurel tries to kill Diaz, but he manages to use a device to stop her. Now that the law has failed to stop Oliver Queen, Diaz is going to kill him.
Not just him, everyone he knows, and all their families…..
Here’s what we know about Wonder Woman 2. It’ll reunite star Gal Gadot with director Patty Jenkins, it’ll move the action forward to the 1980s, Kristen Wiig is playing Cheetah, and there will be a need for a deserted shopping mall in Alexandria, VA. The superhero sequel is coming to my neck of the woods to shoot scenes at Landmark Mall, a once-great shopping hub that is pretty much a ghost town now.
Who knows? Maybe only an Amazonian can pump some life into a dead shopping mall? We’ll find out when production moves there in June and July, with some additional filming to take place at undisclosed locations in DC.
This will be a big economic boost to the area as movie productions usually bring with them a ton of spending. And of course, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. are getting their share of incentives for coming. Maybe a new Godkiller sword? The last one got all broken up.
I spent A LOT of time as a kid wandering Landmark’s halls. I was there a few months ago to hit up Macy’s but there wasn’t much else going on. Looks like I’ll need to make a return visit soon, hang out with the Amazons. Maybe treat ’em to an Orange Julius.
A couple of days ago saw the release of the first Black Panther deleted scene, centering on the relationship between two important but definitely supporting characters. Today there are two more scenes dropped from the movie’s final cut and these focus on T’Challa and his relationship with his father, T’Chaka, the former king of Wakanda and predecessor as Black Panther.
In the first clip we see a much younger T’Chaka, still spry and active as the Black Panther, grappling with a difficult choice he’s been forced to make. But he also catches his son T’Challa snooping around with Nakia, and they discuss the responsibilities that weigh on a king’s shoulders. T’Chaka’s jokes about being “old and grey” in the future resonate in the second clip, which takes place after T’Challa has defended his crown and undergone the ritual to regain his Black Panther powers. After speaking with his deceased father in the spirit realm, T’Challa talks with Zuri (Forest Whitaker) about why his father gave up being Black Panther while remaining king, and the response is pretty funny.
Neither of these scenes needed to be in the final cut, that’s for sure, but they do help flesh out the film’s central theme of a father’s legacy to his son. Black Panther is still in theaters now, but hits digital on May 8th and Blu-ray a week later.
Deadpool 2 arrives in a couple of weeks, and you know? It’s probably going to make a lot of chimichangas. Probably not Infinity War numbers but it should do well enough to inspire some funny tweets from Ryan Reynolds about coming close. And if it does, then maybe we’ll get a Deadpool 3 after all, even if Reynolds doesn’t think there will be one.
The sequel’s first clip has arrived and it’s everything we could have hoped for. Domino (Zazie Beetz) uses her luck manipulating powers to drive a big rig through traffic while Deadpool follows in a slow moving moped. Meanwhile he’s making some hilarious, and fairly obvious, double entendres about Cable (Josh Brolin) who is entering the vehicle from the rear. The action is slick and polished, just like we’d expect from John Wick and Atomic Blonde director David Leitch. If the rest of the movie is like this we are in for a treat.
Hopefully what we’re seeing here is exactly what will be on the screen. Some of the jokes from previous teasers has already been revealed to not be in the final movie, but now Reynolds adds one joke in particular got cut. Why? Because it was aimed directly at Disney. Not even 20th Century Fox dares make fun of the Mouse. Especially with a potential deal in the works. Reynolds tells EW…
“This is a sore spot for me because there’s a joke in the movie that is not in the movie now because — I’m probably not even allowed to say this — Fox made me take it out,” he said. “It had more to do with Disney, and they made me take it out. As I look back at it, I think maybe that was a wise decision.”
Disney’s already pulling the strings and the ink isn’t even on the contract yet.
French director Alexandre Moors made a splash a few years ago with Blue Caprice, a drama that attempted to explore the mind of the DC Sniper John Allen Muhammad. It was a tremendous film that I considered one of the year’s best, but it sadly flew under the radar. Moors has laid low since then but he returned last year at Sundance with another color-themed film, The Yellow Birds, and the war movie is finally coming home.
Based on the book by Kevin Powers and once eyed by David Lowery (A Ghost Story) as a potential directing gig, The Yellow Birds centers on two soldiers who become good friends during the Iraq War. But when one suffers a tragic fate, it’s up to the other to explain to the soldier’s mother that he failed in a promise made before deployment. The film has an impressive cast led by Han Solo himself, Alden Ehrenreich, along with Tye Sheridan, Jennifer Aniston, Toni Collette, Jason Patric, and Jack Huston.
Both me and fellow PDCer Mae Abdulbaki saw this in Park City last year and neither of us was impressed and complained about its lack of depth. Perhaps the lackluster reviews is why it’s quietly dropping on DirecTV beginning May 17th before hitting theaters in June.
Michael Bay has found an actress to lead his live-action Dora the Explorer movie, and he didn’t go very far to get her. Isabela Moner, who starred in Transformers: The Last Knight, will play the popular Nickelodeon character.
In this version of Dora’s story, she’s grown into a teenager. Obviously. She’s moved into the city to stay with her cousin Diego, going on adventures with him and her monkey pal, Boots. In the cartoon series that ran for 8 seasons and 172 episodes Dora was a 7-year-old girl with a talking backpack.
Bay is producing through his Platinum Dunes banner, while The Muppets’ James Bobin will direct from a script by Nicholas Stoller (also of The Muppets) and New Girl writer Danielle Sanchez-Witzel.
Will the series’ core fans show up for a teenage Dora movie? Maybe somebody more familiar to the show can clue me in if there’s any appeal to seeing a very different version of the character?
Dora the Explorer is due to open on August 2nd 2019. [Variety]
Something tells me the decision to reboot a grim ‘n gritty Robin Hood franchise was inspired less by love of the character and more about utilizing a recognizable property. And that’s fine, plenty of movies have begun with those motivations and turned out fine. But what’s going to separate this version of the archer’s story from the countless others? Including the recent version starring Russell Crowe? That still remains to be seen after today’s trailer.
Kingsman star Taron Egerton fires his bow as the legendary robber of the rich and giver to the poor, in a dark origin story that sets him as an anarchist of sorts. Jamie Foxx joins him as Little John, Robin’s best friend and loyal confidante. Maid Marion is played by The Knick‘s Eve Hewson while Fifty Shades of Grey‘s Jamie Dornan is Will Scarlett. We also have a villainous turn by Ben Mendelsohn to look forward to as he plays the Sheriff of Nottingham. So an impressive cast all around and the action looks solid from first-time feature director Otto Bathurst, best known for episodes of Black Mirror and Peaky Blinders.
Here’s the synopsis: Robin of Loxley (Taron Egerton) a war-hardened Crusader and his Moorish commander (Jamie Foxx) mount an audacious revolt against the corrupt English crown in a thrilling action-adventure packed with gritty battlefield exploits, mind-blowing fight choreography, and a timeless romance. Summit Entertainment presents, an Appian Way production, a Safehouse Pictures production, in association with Thunder Roads Films.
