‘I Wish You All The Best’ Trailer: Tommy Dorfman’s Directorial Debut Features Alexandra Daddario, Lena Dunham, & More

I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST opens November 7th

On the final day of Pride Month, Lionsgate has revealed the trailer for Tommy Dorfman’s directorial debut, I Wish You All the Best. The film, an adaptation of Mason Deaver’s best-selling book, premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival. Dorfman also wrote the screenplay, which centers on Ben, who comes out as non-binary and is disowned by his family, forcing them to move in with their estranged older sister.

Dorfman, who starred in 13 Reasons Why and appeared in Lena Dunham’s film Sharp Stick, gathered an impressive cast for her debut feature. Corey Fogelmanis, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Amy Landecker, Alexandra Daddario, Cole Sprouse, and Dunham has a role, as well.

SYNOPSIS: In this refreshingly modern coming-of-age story based on the best-selling book by Mason Deaver, a high school junior (Corey Fogelmanis) comes out as nonbinary and is thrown out of their family’s home. With nowhere else to turn, they move in with their estranged older sister (Alexandra Daddario) and her husband (Cole Sprouse). After enrolling in a new school, they find support from an eccentric art teacher (Lena Dunham) and form an unexpected bond with a kindhearted student (Miles Gutierrez-Riley). With the help of their new relationships, they navigate the awkward hurdles of young adulthood in this sweetly funny journey of self-discovery that celebrates the power of being true to yourself.

Reviews have been very good, with the film at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. That should bode well for I Wish You All the Best when it opens in theaters on November 7th.

‘Troll 2’ Teaser: A New Troll Emerges In Sequel To Netflix’s Norwegian Monster Hit

TROLL 2 hits Netflix on December 1st

This might be an odd thing to sit around and think about, but if you ever wondered what a Norwegian kaiju movie would look like, then 2022’s Troll was your thing. Directed by Roar Uthaug and released by Netflix, the film quickly became a favorite for fans of the monster genre. Now Uthaug is back with the anticipated sequel, Troll 2, that will come stomping onto the streamer this December.

Troll 2 finds Ine Marie Wilmann, Kim Falck, and Mads Sjøgård Pettersen reprising their roles as a new Troll begins wreaking havoc throughout Norway. To defeat it, they’ll need to find some new allies and delve deep into Norwegian mythology.

Espen Aukan returns to write the screenplay, leaning on the rich Norwegian lore that has become the franchise’s calling card.

Uthaug directed the Tomb Raider reboot with Alicia Vikander in 2018, but Troll is proving to be a greater success that will stick around for longer.

SYNOPSIS: When a dangerous new troll is awakened, unleashing devastation across Norway, beloved adventurers Nora, Andreas, and Captain Kris are thrust into their most perilous mission yet. ‘Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale’ Trailer: The Crawleys Enter A New Era This September

DOWNTON ABBEY: THE GRAND FINALE opens on September 12th

Well, Downton Abbey fans, it’s time to say goodbye to the Crawleys and their fabulously loyal staff. This fall, Focus Features releases Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, and true to the title, it’s the final film in the trilogy and the end of the saga that Julian Fellowes began way back in 2010.

Once again directed by Simon Curtis and penned by Fellowes, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale finds the Crawleys and their loyal staff entering the 1930s, with new questions about how to proceed into an uncertain future.  The question of how to manage the estate as the world grows more modern seems to have finally come to a head and there will need to be an answer.

Pretty much everyone from the TV series and the previous movies returns, while there have been a few new additions. Simon Russell Beale, Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Raquel Cassidy, Brendan Coyle, Michelle Dockery, Kevin Doyle, Michael Fox, Joanne Froggatt, Paul Giamatti, Harry Hadden-Paton, Robert James-Collier, Allen Leech, Phyllis Logan, Elizabeth McGovern, Sophie McShera, Lesley Nicol, Alessandro Nivola, Dominic West, Penelope Wilton, Arty Froushan, Joely Richardson, Paul Copley, and Douglas Reith star.

Sadly missing is the late Maggie Smith, but the presence of her towering character, Violet Crawley, looms large.

SYNOPSIS: The cinematic return of the global phenomenon follows the Crawley family and their staff as they enter the 1930s. When Mary finds herself at the center of a public scandal and the family faces financial trouble, the entire household grapples with the threat of social disgrace. The Crawleys must embrace change as the staff prepares for a new chapter with the next generation leading Downton Abbey into the future.

I’m pretty excited for to see how this wraps up the trilogy. I’ve never seen an episode of the show but have really enjoyed the movies. Is that weird?

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale opens in theaters on September 12th from Focus Features.

‘Project Hail Mary’ Trailer: Ryan Gosling Is Earth’s Last Hope In Phil Lord & Chris Miller’s New Film

PROJECT HAIL MARY opens March 20th 2026

It’s been over a decade since Phil Lord and Chris Miller last directed a movie. What was it? 22 Jump Street in 2014 (!!!), which feels like a lifetime ago. While they were originally meant to direct Solo: A Star Wars Story, they were booted from that and eventually settled on an adaptation of Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary as their next project. It’s taken a few more years, but the first trailer for the Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi film is finally here.

Project Hail Mary is the latest Weir adaptation, following 2015’s The Martian which earned seven Academy Award nominations. That film’s writer, Drew Goddard, returns to pen the story of Ryland Grace, a science teacher sent into space to figure out why Earth’s sun is dying. There’s a problem, though, in that Ryland wakes up with no memory of himself or his mission.

I love this trailer, and it captures the vibe of the book which is edge of your seat thrilling, while also being incredibly technical and funny at the same time. Basically, if you loved The Martian you’re probably gonna love this one, too. Both books are great page-turners.

Gosling is joined in the cast by Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Lionel Boyce, and Ken Leung.

SYNOPSIS: Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.

Amazon MGM Studios will release Project Hail Mary on March 20th 2026.

Box Office: ‘F1’ Gives Brad Pitt The Biggest Debut Of His Career, ‘M3GAN 2.0’ Malfunctions

F1: The Movie lapped M3GAN 2.0 while SORRY, BABY had a strong debut
  1. F1: The Movie (review)- $55.6M

Brad Pitt’s star power drove Apple to its first major blockbuster hit, as F1 got out of the gate with $55.6M domestic. Worldwide, the film’s $144M total is Pitt’s biggest opening weekend over, besting World War Z at $111M. The Formula One drama about a veteran racer taking an arrogant upstart under his wing, also took in $27.7M from IMAX screenings globally.

2. How to Train Your Dragon– $19.4M/$200M

Criticism about Dreamworks’ live-action How to Train Your Dragon being a thing appears to be moot. The film has been a smash hit, hitting the $200M domestically and should surpass the $217M stateside haul of the original in a few days. Worldwide, the film has $454M, just $40M shy of the entire run of its predecessor.

3. Elio– $10.7M/$42.2M

No such luck that Pixar’s Elio would have a long, successful run based on word of mouth. The struggling film fell 49% in week two for just $10.7M and $42M domestically, while globally it has $72M.

4. M3GAN 2.0 (review)- $10.2M

Blumhouse continues to try and reclaim its old magic. M3GAN 2.0 seemed like a surefire hit based on the $181M success of M3GAN in 2023. Instead, the sequel malfunctioned with just $10.2M domestically and $17M globally. Ouch. Forget the critical reviews; those shouldn’t matter for a movie that’s meant to be silly horror fun, even with the shift in genre to action-comedy. The reason for this, in my opinion, was the decision to drop it in the middle of summer rather than in January. Whoever made that move should be fired.

5. 28 Years Later– $9.7M/$50.3M

6. Lilo & Stitch– $6.9M/$400M

7. Mission: Impossible-The Final Reckoning– $4.1M/$185.9M

8. Materialists– $2.9M/$30.4M

Celine Song’s Materialists has given A24 its biggest movie of the year at $30.4M, surpassing Warfare‘s $25M.

9. Ballerina– $2.1M/$55.4M

10. Karate Kid: Legends– $1M/$51.5M

Also…Eva Victor’s Sorry, Baby (review) opened in four locations and earned $86K for a $21K per site average. Victor wrote and directed the film as well as starred alongside Naomie Ackie and Lucas Hedges, telling the darkly comic story of a woman and her recovery from a traumatic event. A24 will give it a national rollout on July 18th.

Vin Diesel Confirms ‘Fast X’ Sequel For April 2027, Paul Walker’s Brian O’Conner To Return

Vin Diesel sets FAST X 2 for April 2027

Vin Diesel had some surprises to drop about Fast X 2, the “final” film in the street racing franchise that has been speeding along since 2001. He told the crowd at FuelFest [via Screenrant] that the anticipated film will hit theaters in April 2027. This is the window Diesel had been asking Universal for, as it was the same release timeframe as 2015’s Furious 7, the highest-grossing sequel with $1.5B globally.

The biggest news from Diesel, however, was that the film would also see the return of Brian O’Connor, the character played by the late Paul Walker. Not only that, but the story will return to Los Angeles with a focus on the street racing scene, going back to the franchise’s roots.

Walker starred in five Fast & Furious films until his tragic death in 2013. The O’Connor character drove off into the sunset at the end of Furious 7, with Walker’s brothers Caleb and Cody filling in as stand-ins to complete his scenes. It’s unclear if the plan is to bring them back to portray O’Connor again, or if CGI will be used.

It’s been diminishing returns of late for the $7.5B franchise. 2023’s Fast X earned $714M, the lowest since Fast Five‘s $626M in 2011.

“Moral Cop Out”: James Cameron Criticizes Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’

James Cameron calls OPPENHEIMER a "moral cop out"

James Cameron is no fan of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Cameron, who is developing his own atomic bomb movie, Ghosts of Hiroshima, adapting Charles Pellegrino novel To Hell and Back: The Last Train from Hiroshima which explores the devastating ramifications for the Japanese, criticizes Nolan’s film as a “moral cop out” for refusing to do the same.

Cameron told Deadline

“Yeah…it’s interesting what he stayed away from. Look, I love the filmmaking, but I did feel that it was a bit of a moral cop out…Because it’s not like ‘Oppenheimer’ didn’t know the effects. He’s got one brief scene in the film where we see, and I don’t like to criticize another filmmaker’s film, but there’s only one brief moment where he sees some charred bodies in the audience, and then the film goes on to show how it deeply moved him. But I felt that it dodged the subject. I don’t know whether the studio or Chris felt that that was a third rail that they didn’t want to touch, but I want to go straight at the third rail. I’m just stupid that way.”

Cameron continued, acknowledging that Ghosts of Hiroshima might not be a commercial success, but he hopes to capture the same level of authenticity as Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan. The story focuses on a real-life man, Japanese marine engineer Tsutomu Yamaguchi who survived both atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII. He lived to the age of 93 and died in 2010.

“You’re dealing with something that’s on a whole other level. Look, this may be a movie that I make that makes the least of any movie I’ve ever made, because I’m not going to be sparing, I’m not going to be circumspect. I want to do for what happened at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, what Steven Spielberg did with the Holocaust and D-Day with ‘Saving Private Ryan.’ He showed it the way it happened. He and I talked about this, and he shared this with me. When he was making that film, notwithstanding whatever the studio wanted from it, he said, I’m going to make it as intense as I can make it, because my limitation as any filmmaker — and he’s the best out there — is that I can’t make it as intense as it really was. That was an object lesson. You’ve got to use everything at your cinematic disposal to show people what happened. We all love our horror movies, and horror movies love to outdo each other. This is true horror, because it happened.”

To be fair, this criticism of Oppenheimer isn’t new. The film was a huge hit, earning $975M and winning seven Academy Awards, but many have noted the limited perspective and Nolan’s focus on the man J. Robert Oppenheimer rather than the repercussions of what he built. Clearly, the movie Cameron is making is not what Nolan had in mind, and that’s okay.

There’s room for the visions of both filmmakers, and Cameron prefers to issue warnings directly. His Terminator was a dire warning about the threat of nuclear holocaust, while Avatar warns of environmental disaster. It’s what he does. And while he fears Ghosts of Hiroshima could be his least successful movie, if played right it could be just as much of a hit as Oppenheimer.

Amazon’s James Bond Wishlist Has Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi, & Harris Dickinson; Denis Villeneuve Directing One Film

Amazon's James Bond wishlist includes Elordi, Holland, and Dickinson.

Now that Amazon MGM has set Denis Villeneuve to direct Bond 26, there are a couple of big decisions left to make. A screenwriter is next on the list, followed by the actor who will take on the role of 007. Variety reports that on Amazon’s shortlist are Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi, and Harris Dickinson, all English actors under 30, to play James Bond.

The criteria all but eliminates other actors on fan wishlists, such as Henry Cavill, Idris Elba, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson who are too old. A decision is expected to be made soon in order to have the next movie ready for theaters in 2028.

Elordi is another popular choice with fans following his roles in Euphoria, Priscilla, and Saltburn. He most recently starred in the drama On Swift Horses. Holland is pretty busy with Spider-Man: Brand New Day and his likely appearances in the next two Avengers movies. Dickinson is known for his roles in The Iron Claw, Babygirl, and The King’s Man.

If I had money to bet on it, I’d go with Dickinson, who has the look, style, and is less of a known figure than Elordi and Holland. The actor should never overshadow the character, and that’s a rule that has served the Bond franchise well over many decades.

Overall, I find these choices incredibly dull. Come on, really?

How much power will Villeneuve have in picking the next Bond? In a report by Puck, Villeneuve is only aboard to direct one movie, and he won’t even have final cut on it. That says producers David Heyman (who wanted Alfonso Cuaron) and Amy Pascal are holding tight to the creative reins. They’ll want to name a screenwriter with no connection to the previous era of Bond movies, and move the franchise in a completely new direction. Villeneuve is the guy to kick that off, but not take it into the future.

Is Michael Bay Returning To Direct A New ‘Transformers’ Film?

Michael Bay returning to TRANSFORMERS?

Is Michael Bay ready to be “More Than Meets The Eye” again? According to Puck, Bay is developing with plans to direct a new Transformers movie. Bay last directed a film in this franchise in 2017, but has stayed involved with it as a producer.

Bay has directed five Transformers live-action movies, with the explosive blockbusters earning nearly $5B overall. But those numbers began to dwindle, and by the time of 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight, the total box office was down to $605M. The franchise continued with Bumblebee, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and last year’s animated prequel Transformers One, but the numbers haven’t rebounded.

Paramount has more Transformers movies on the horizon, including a live-action project from Transformers One director Josh Cooley.  Also teased by Rise of the Beasts director Steven Caple was a Transformers/GI Joe crossover, but it remains to be seen if that wishlisted pairing ever happens.

There’s good reason for Bay to tackle the Autobot/Decepticon war again. He’s directed two movies since 2017: Netflix actioner 6 Underground in 2019, and 2022’s Ambulance. Neither film has been well-received. The closest thing to a hit movie that Bay’s had in ages was Pain & Gain‘s $86M in 2013.

Interview: Destry Allyn Spielberg Talks Directorial Debut ‘Please Don’t Feed The Children’

Destry Allyn Spielberg's DON'T FEED THE CHILDREN is available now on Tubi

Opening this week on Tubi is Destry Allyn Spielberg’s directorial debut, Please Don’t Feed the Children. The daughter of maybe the most famous director ever, Steven Spielberg, and actress Kate Capshaw,  Destry’s film is like something her father might’ve done. A horror set in the wake of a viral outbreak targeting adults, the story is also a teen-centric coming-of-age story and drama. Michelle Dockery, Giancarlo Esposito, Zoe Colletti, and more lead the impressive cast.

I had the chance to spend a few minutes talking with Destry about Please Don’t Feed the Children. We talked about Destry’s unconventional path to filmmaking, beginning after her career as an equestrian was cut short.  She talked about wanting to make a movie that focused on youthful characters with young actors in the main roles, and how she didn’t necessarily set out to make a horror movie. We also talked about wanting to tackle many different kinds of film, including her upcoming murder mystery project.
