It’s been over a decade since Phil Lord and Chris Miller last directed a movie. What was it? 22 Jump Street in 2014 (!!!), which feels like a lifetime ago. While they were originally meant to direct Solo: A Star Wars Story, they were booted from that and eventually settled on an adaptation of Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary as their next project. It’s taken a few more years, but the first trailer for the Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi film is finally here.
Project Hail Mary is the latest Weir adaptation, following 2015’s The Martian which earned seven Academy Award nominations. That film’s writer, Drew Goddard, returns to pen the story of Ryland Grace, a science teacher sent into space to figure out why Earth’s sun is dying. There’s a problem, though, in that Ryland wakes up with no memory of himself or his mission.
I love this trailer, and it captures the vibe of the book which is edge of your seat thrilling, while also being incredibly technical and funny at the same time. Basically, if you loved The Martian you’re probably gonna love this one, too. Both books are great page-turners.
Gosling is joined in the cast by Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Lionel Boyce, and Ken Leung.
SYNOPSIS: Science teacher Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) wakes up on a spaceship light years from home with no recollection of who he is or how he got there. As his memory returns, he begins to uncover his mission: solve the riddle of the mysterious substance causing the sun to die out. He must call on his scientific knowledge and unorthodox ideas to save everything on Earth from extinction… but an unexpected friendship means he may not have to do it alone.
Amazon MGM Studios will release Project Hail Mary on March 20th 2026.
