GI Joe/Transformers Crossover Movie Made Official By Paramount

Paramount has been trying for years to get the GI Joe franchise to be as big as the billion-dollar Transformers. It’s largely been unsuccessful, though, including the recent Snake Eyes reboot in 2021. But, fans got excited about GI Joe for the first time when a crossover was teased at the conclusion of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, and now that teamup movie has been made official.

It was announced during Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation that a GI Joe/Transformers movie is in the works. No filmmaker is attached, however, which is interesting when one considers that Rise of the Beasts director Steven Caple is the one who got the ball rolling and has spoken about it most. He’s attached to another Transformers project, though, and that’s probably what’s keeping him away. Steven Spielberg, Michael Bay, and Lorenzo DiBonaventura are among the film’s producers.

This could be the thing that sustains audience interest in GI Joe. Snake Eyes only managed $40M worldwide, which is pretty sad. The biggest movie by far was 2013’s GI Joe: Retaliation, which starred Dwayne Johnson and earned $375M globally, which was okay but not enough to get a much-talked-about sequel off the ground.
