‘Pinocchio’ Trailer: Roberto Benigni Is Done Trying To Convince Us He Can Play A Puppet

There are a bunch of Pinocchio movies in development right now, including one from Guillermo Del Toro. But there’s another from a visionary filmmaker, Matteo Garrone, and it features the return of actor Roberto Benigni to the classic fairy tale, which he infamously directed and starred in years ago.

In this new version of Pinocchio, Benigni takes on the role of Gepetto, which is more fitting than when he tried to convince us his old ass could be a wooden boy. Federico Ielapi plays Pinocchio, the puppet who wishes to be a real, flesh and blood human child.

The script was written by Carlo Collodi. Joining Benigni and Ielapi in the cast are Marine Vacth, Marcello Fonte, Gigi Proietti, Davide Marotta, Massimiliano Gallo, Rocco Papaleo, and Massimo Ceccherini.

Garrone is the director best known for his acclaimed mafia film Gomorrah. More apt for this film is probably his 2015 fantasy Tale of Tales which blended reality with a heavy dose of surrealism.

Pinocchio opened in Italy last year, and was part of the Berlin Film Festival. Currently, there is no U.S. release date but that will surely change.

SYNOPSIS: Geppetto (Servillo), an old woodcarver, receives a piece of wood perfect for his next project: a puppet. But something magical happens – the cheeky puppet begins to talk, and can walk, run and eat like any young boy. Geppetto calls him Pinocchio, and brings him up as his son. But Pinocchio finds it hard to be good. Easily led astray, he tumbles from one misadventure to another as he is tricked, kidnapped and chased by bandits through a fantastical world full of imaginative creatures – from the belly of a giant fish, to the land of toys and the field of miracles. His loyal friend, the Fairy with the Turquoise Hair, tries to make him see that his dream – to be a real boy – can never come true until Pinocchio finally changes his ways.

Kevin Smith Developing ‘The Green Hornet’ Animated Series

Kevin Smith loves his heroes in green. Smith, who famously wrote a stretch on the Green Arrow comic years ago, has also been involved with another emerald crime-fighter: the Green Hornet. Years ago, he was to write a live-action film featuring the iconic character, but when it fell through he turned that story into a comic book.

Now, Smith finds himself back on the Green Hornet beat, as he’s developing an animated series with the folks at WildBrain, owner of the Peanuts franchise. This version of the Green Hornet won’t center on the classic character, Britt Reid, but will be a contemporary story focused on the grown son of the original Green Hornet and the daughter of the original Kato. Together, they’ll fight crime in a modern Century Century, racing through town in their high-tech car, Black Beauty.

The project is geared towards a family-friendly audience, which is something that is a little bit different for Smith.

“It’s an honor to escort the legendary Green Hornet and Kato into their very own animated series for the first time in the rich history of these iconic pop culture characters,” Smith said in a statement. “We’ll be telling a tale of two Hornets – past and future – that spans generations and draws inspiration from a lifetime spent watching classic cartoons and amazing animation like ‘Batman: The Animated Series,’ ‘Heavy Metal,’ and ‘Super Friends.’ I can’t believe WildBrain gave me this job and I can’t thank them enough for the opportunity to extend my childhood a little longer.”

The Green Hornet was created in the 1930s and crossed over into radio, comic books, movies, and the 1960s TV series made popular by Bruce Lee as Kato. Seth Rogen teamed with director Michel Gondry on a reboot in 2011 that was critically-panned but made $227M worldwide. Most recently it was reported that Universal is developing another Green Hornet live-action film that would be in the classic mold, but that is still very early on.

Smith’s animated The Green Hornet is currently being shopped to networks and streaming services. [Deadline]

‘Kajillionaire’ Trailer: Miranda July Returns With A Grifter Comedy Starring Evan Rachel Wood And Gina Rodriguez

Miranda July became an indie superstar with her two unique features, 2005’s Me and You and Everyone We Know, and 2011’s The Future. If the gap between those movies wasn’t enough of an indicator, the nine-year wait for her latest, Kajillionaire, proves that July works on her own time. Based on the buzz that emerged from Sundance, the wait was more than worth it.

Kajillionaire was written and directed by July, and stars Evan Rachel Wood, Gina Rodriguez, Debra Winger, and Richard Jenkins. The story, which seems particularly timely right now, centers on a family of scam artists, with Rodriguez as the newest member of their crew.

The film debuted earlier this year, and I’ll admit, I avoided it outright. July is not a filmmaker whose work speaks to me, although based on everything I’ve heard and the footage from this trailer, this might be the one that changes my mind.

SYNOPSIS: Con-artists Theresa (Debra Winger) and Robert (Richard Jenkins) have spent 26 years training their only daughter, Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood), to swindle, scam, and steal at every opportunity. During a desperate, hastily conceived heist, they charm a stranger (Gina Rodriguez) into joining their next scam, only to have their entire world turned upside down.

Kajillionaire opens in theaters on September 18th.

Ron Howard Says There Is No ‘Solo’ Sequel Planned

It’s kinda funny how, despite most people saying they didn’t like Solo: A Star Wars Story, and the movie’s failure at the box office, lately people can’t shut up about sequels and spinoffs.  Personally, I think we’re just wired to expect them and that’s why few can believe aa franchise movie is just one and done. Well, Ron Howard is here to tell you there is no Solo sequel happening. At least not right now.

Howard, who took over directing Solo after Phil Lord and Chris Miller exited, tells Sirius XM’s Radio Andy that another film is not in the works…

“Well, there’s no sequel planned now. It’s amazing to be a part of a Star Wars movie that seems to be a kind of underground hit, which is not what you’d expect, but that’s been an odd, strange journey for that movie.”

Now, this might not have anything to do with a rumored spinoff series featuring Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian. That project, which some have tried to pretend is official, is very much not a confirmed thing.

Han Solo himself, Alden Ehrenreich, has suggested something COULD be happening, but again, it means nothing unless Disney/Lucasfilm make an announcement.

Even with my skepticism, part of me can’t escape the fact that Solo left a lot of potentially great storylines and characters on the table. Somebody’s got to do something with them, right?

Next up for Howard is his documentary, Rebuilding Paradise, which opens tomorrow, July 31st.

‘Luca’: Pixar’s Next Film Is A Summertime Coming-Of-Age Story In The Italian Riviera

If this were a coronavirus-free world, we would have already experienced Pixar’s latest film, Soul. While we’re still a few months away before that afterlife comedy hits theaters, Pixar is already developing what comes next. The animated feature Luca will transport us to the gorgeous, sun-kissed Italian Riviera when it opens next summer.

Pixar has debuted concept art for Luca, an original film from Oscar-nominated La Luna director Enrico Casarosa, based on his own childhood. On board to produce is Andrea Warren, known for working on Cars 3.  Our first look at Luca comes in the form of concept art, a gorgeous piece featuring two kids diving off the cliffs of the Italian Riviera. It looks like an image from Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, or maybe The Kings of Summer.

While these two are clearly loving life to the fullest, one of the boys is hiding a potentially dangeous secret…he’s actually a sea monster.

SYNOPSIS: Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated feature is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface.”

Are we sure Guadagnino had nothing to do with this?

Here’s what Casarosa had to say about the movie and why it means so much to him…

“This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in ‘Luca.’ So in addition to the beauty and charm of the Italian seaside, our film will feature an unforgettable summer adventure that will fundamentally change Luca.”

Luca is currently set to open on June 18th 2021.

‘Happy Happy Joy Joy: The Ren & Stimpy Story’ Trailer: Sundance Doc Explores The Rise And Fall Of Nickelodeon’s Bizarre Cartoon

The modern era of adult-oriented animation couldn’t have happened without Ren and Stimpy. Created by John Kricfalusi, the series was bizarre and subversive and helped Nickelodeon breakout of its kid-friendly image. But as the show’s popularity soared, it also became the center of controversy due to Kricfalusi’s odd behavior. The rise and fall of the cult favorite cartoon is captured in the Sundance doc, Happy Happy Joy Joy: The Ren & Stimpy Story.

Directed by documentary filmmakers Ron Cicero & Kimo Easterwood, the film looks at the impact Ren and Stimpy had when it debuted in 1991, ushering in a new era of mature artist-driven animated content. Kricfalusi, a longtime animation vet (he directed the Mighty Mouse movie in 1982), looked at as a rock star of the industry, but his odd behavior and conflicts with Nickelodeon execs over the show’s often disturbing content led to his being fired after only a year. Kricfalusi was later accused of sexual abuse, and many consider the show’s legacy to be tarnished.

Taking part in the doc is show producer Vanessa Coffey, legendary voice actor Billy West, and many more.

Happy Happy Joy Joy premiered at Sundance earlier this year, and will finally hit VOD on August 14th.

SYNOPSIS: In the early 1990s, the animated show Ren & Stimpy broke ratings records and was a touchstone for a generation of fans and artists. Creator John Kricfalusi was celebrated as a visionary, but even though his personality suffused the show, dozens of artists and network executives were just as responsible for the show’s meteoric rise. As Kricfalusi’s worst impulses were let loose at the workplace and new allegations about even more disturbing behavior have surfaced, his reputation now threatens to taint the show forever.

Karl Urban Reveals His Small Role In ‘Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’

It wasn’t enough for Karl Urban to be part of the Star Trek franchise, he had to ahead and sneak his way into Star Wars, as well. Urban, who currently stars in Amazon’s hit series The Boys, revealed to Digital Spy that he has a tiny cameo in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but you wouldn’t recognize him if you saw him…

“I had the good fortune to go and visit J.J. Abrams while he was shooting The Rise of Skywalker. While I was there, he put me in a Stormtrooper uniform and we had a really fun day on set. It’s been one of my life-long goals to be a Stormtrooper, so I can tick that off now.”

The latest trilogy may have been divisive, but I think we’ve all had some fun with the many secret cameos by friends of the filmmakers. Unfortunately, since they tend to be either voicing CGI characters or under helmets, identifying where they pop up is tough.

Urban was at least nice enough to reveal that his scene takes place during our reintroduction to the wildly misused Knights of Ren. He voices one of the Stormtroopers who looks at them with disgust, and identifies exactly who they are.

Blockbuster franchises come easily for Urban, who was also part of Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Riddick, Thor: Ragnarok, and Dredd. Well, that last one SHOULD have led to more but it didn’t.

Next up for Urban is a second season of The Boys, coming to Amazon on September 4th.

Luca Guadagnino, Seth Rogen, & Evan Goldberg Team For Hollywood Hustler Film

Ryan Murphy’s Netflix series Hollywood may have received mixed reviews, but it appears to have set the stage for a new exploration of Tinseltown’s homosexual culture post-WWII. Deadline reports Fox Searchlight has brought Luca Guadagnino, Seth Rogen, and Evan Goldberg to develop a feature film based on Matt Tyrnauer’s doc Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood.

Guadagnino will direct, with Rogen and Goldberg penning the story of Scotty Bowers, a WWII veteran who became a legendary bisexual male hustler and date arranger for many actors looking to keep their homosexuality secret. The doc was based on Bowers’ incendiary book, Full Service: My Adventures in Hollywood and the Secret Sex Lives of the Stars, about his life setting up discrete encounters for closeted celebs from the 1940s to the start of the AIDS epidemic in the early ’80s.

Add this to what is already a busy time for Guadagnino. The Call Me by Your Name filmmaker has HBO miniseries We Are Who We Are coming up, along with a Scarface remake and Lord of the Flies adaptation. Rogen will be seen next in HBO Max comedy An American Pickle.

Millie Bobby Brown To Play A Teenage Con-Artist In Netflix’s ‘The Girls I’ve Been’; Jason Bateman To Produce

When Netflix has a good thing going, they don’t mess around. Following on the Emmy nominations received yesterday by Ozark and Stranger Things, the streaming giant is launching a project that will bring together Jason Bateman and Millie Bobby Brown.

Deadline reports Brown will star in an adaptation of Tess Sharpe’s novel, The Girls I’ve Been, with Bateman set to produce. Brown will take on the role of Nora, a teenage con-artist who must use her gifts of persuasion to get herself, her girlfriend, and ex-boyfriend out of a hostage situation at a bank. It’s unclear if Bateman will direct or take a role for himself, but that tends to be how he does things. Brown will also add this to her list of producing credits.

Netflix is definitely staying in the Millie Bobby Brown business. They’ve also picked up Enola Holmes, a feature film in which brown plays the young sister of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes. Bateman not only picked up a directing nomination for his work on Ozark, but an acting nod, as well. He also earned one for his role on HBO’s The Outsider.
