Melissa McCarthy and her director husband Ben Falcone’s latest film Life of the Party isn’t even out yet and already they’ve got another in the works. The husband and wife comedy duo will team up for Super-Intelligence, an action comedy that will mark their fourth collaboration together.
The film will be written by Steve Mallory, who also wrote their previous comedy The Boss. McCarthy will play a former exec whose earnet but unfulfilled life finds purpose when she is selected for observation by the world’s first super-intelligence — an artificial intelligence that may or may not take over the world.
Shooting begins in July. McCarthy and Falcone’s Life of the Party opens on May 11th, and after that McCarthy shoots crime film The Kitchen. [THR]

Peter Dinklage is in talks to star in Legendary’s upcoming comedy O’Lucky Day, to be directed Jon S. Baird (Filth) from an Andrew Dodge script. And if you guessed it would have Dinklage playing a leprechaun, you were right. The Game of Thrones vet stars as a con man who poses as a leprechaun to get revenge on another. Dinklage will be seen later this year in the terrific sci-fi drama I Think We’re Alone Now, and has an unspecified role in Avengers: Infinity War.
Rock of Ages and Scream Queen‘s Diego Boneta has joined Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton, and Mackenzie Davis in Terminator 6. It was just last week the film was delayed to allow director Tim Miller more time to shoot the movie, but that hasn’t stalled the casting process. The storyline remains a secret, just like Boneta’s role (John Connor???), but we do know it will pick up after the events of Terminator 2 and ignore everything that came later. Terminator 6 opens November 22nd 2019.
Rob Ford’s time as mayor of Toronto was a comical disaster, with the rambunctious politician becoming a nightly punchline on the late-night talk shows. Now his story is headed to the big screen in Run This Town, with Homeland‘s Damian Lewis on board to play him. Lewis will undergo extensive prosthetics to play Ford, who was stripped of his official powers in 2013 due to cocaine abuse and a series of very public scandals, including one instance when he was caught on tape smoking crack. Ford died in 2016 of cancer. The story will be set in the final year of Ford’s mayoral term as a reporter (Ben Platt) tries to expose a scandal, while the mayor’s aids (Nina Dobrev, Mena Massoud) try to keep the story a secret. Jennifer Ehle and Scott Speedman also star with Ricky Tollman directing. [THR]
John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place is one of the best reviewed movies of the year, and its $50M opening weekend the second best for an original horror movie ever. That kind of success, especially for a low budget horror, already has people speculating on a sequel. While nothing has been approved yet, writers Bryan Woods and Scott Beck have some ideas if they decide to continue on.
It’s such a fun world,” Woods said to Fandango. “There are so many things you could do.”
That could be just about anything, like following the same family from the first movie or looking at the post-apocalyptic crisis from a different family’s perspective. The good thing about the film’s conclusion is that it leaves plenty of room for a sequel to go in a variety of directions.
Beck adds, “There are so many discarded set pieces, too, just hiding out on Word documents on our computer. So, yeah, there are certainly so many stories you could tell. It’s just really, at the end of the day, who are the characters in this and what does this situation mean to that dynamic?”
Start counting down the days until A Quiet Place 2 gets the green light, because it’s definitely happening. The biggest question is whether Krasinski, who really found his footing as a director, will come back for another?
We can feel it in our bones that something terrible is going to happen to the innocent family of kids in Marrowbone, the suspenseful new thriller from The Orphanage screenwriter Sergio G. Sanchez. Having not missed a beat since his breakout script a decade ago, Sanchez ratchets up the dread with surgical precision until it’s almost unbearable, while telling a haunting coming-of-age story about first love and family loyalty.
It may sound like a lot to manage but Sanchez, who also serves as director, knows to lean on his immensely-talented cast for support. They help navigate the complicated mix of tones, as much a whirlwind as a teenager’s raw emotions, within a Gothic horror of surprising depth. Set in rural America at the close of the 1960s, Marrowbone follows a destitute family of four siblings forced to live in their mother’s creaky (and creepy) childhood home after she dies. They fled from their abusive father, took their mother’s maiden name of Marrowbone, but with her passing it’s up to eldest son Jack (George MacKay) to watch over them and keep them hidden away in secret. Until he turns 21 and is old enough to inherit the estate and legally watch over his siblings: saintly Jane (Mia Goth), rebellious Billy (Charlie Heaton), and young Sam (Matthew Stagg).
They live a hard life on their own, but they have one another to rely on. And at least for one glorious day they even make a friend who shares their love for adventure, Allie (The Witch‘s Anya Taylor-Joy), a local librarian working within the city. Then, a gunshot. A cry for help. And a timejump of six months. When we return to the Marrowbones the house they live in has the shades drawn in, there’s a mysterious stain on the wall, and large sections of the home are simply off-limits. Good luck telling a house full of teenagers and one inquisitive child that they can’t go somewhere.
Danger lurks everywhere in Marrowbone, but the greatest threats are those unseen. Jack’s need to get out and spread his wings attracts him to the city, where he meets Allie for brief romantic encounters. But these excursions also draw the attention of a hotshot lawyer eager to win Allie’s heart and do away with the mystery Marrowbone family. That yearning for adventure also burns within Billy, and there’s a boiling jealousy within him that is going to be trouble. The constant threat of their estranged father returning also looms large, like a tumor just waiting to turn malignant.
Sanchez emphasizes tension over jump scares, setting out a number of dire traps we keep waiting to explode and consume the Marrowbone kids. It’s very much like another of Sanchez’s screenplays, The Impossible (directed by J.A. Bayona just as The Orphanage was), which told a harrowing story of a completely different variety. But the feeling of overcoming tragedy and hardship to be with the ones we love is there, just as it has been in all of Sanchez’s films. Shot by cinematographer Xavi Gimenez, there’s a distinct break between the gloom of the Marrowbones’ captivity, because that’s basically what it is, and Jack’s trysts with the colorful Allie. It’s almost like we’re watching two separate movies, one filled with darkness and paranoia, the other a sunny teen romance about two lovers from opposite sides of the tracks.
The performances are uniformly excellent, which shouldn’t be a surprise. MacKay, probably best known for Captain Fantastic a couple of years ago, impresses as the overwhelmed Jack. And I appreciate that Taylor-Joy wasn’t reduced to just being a symbol of Jack’s aspirations towards freedom, she’s an active participant in the Marrowbones’ salvation or doom. I won’t spoil which. If there’s a problem it’s Sanchez’s weighty setup which takes too long to get going, and an artsy final act that is too clever for its own good. Without giving too much away, Sanchez does a lot of screwing around with timelines and even if everything eventually makes sense there is still a great deal of unnecessary confusion to get through. Despite that, Marrowbone spins an evocative tale of ominous beauty that will appeal to those looking for something different from the typical horror.

We Said: “If focusing on
Barnum’s most glowing trait is what it took for Jackman to get his raucous,
hugely entertaining show off the ground then I’m okay with that.” Rating: 3.5 out of 5

Thomas Anderson’s latest film reunites him with Daniel Day-Lewis, who stars as
Reynolds Woodcock, a high-strung, stuffy fashion designer seeking his latest
muse. Set in the glamour of 1950’s post-war London, the renowned dressmaker finds
a kindred spirit in waitress Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes the
centerpiece of the house of Woodcock, for better or for worse.
.We Said: “I don’t
know if the Alma and Reynolds are meant to be; and I don’t know if that’s even
what Anderson wants us to think about with Phantom Thread. In this twisted love
story, chaos and dysfunction are the ties that bind, and if that union leads to
more beauty in the world then who are we to judge?” Rating: 4 out of 5
Based on the unbelievable true story, director Ridley Scott’s
new thriller All the Money in the World follows the kidnapping of 16-year-old John
Paul Getty III and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother Gail (Michelle
Williams) to convince his world-famous billionaire grandfather (Christopher
Plummer) to pay the ransom.
We Said: “It’s a solidly
successful crime film that shows Scott’s remarkable professionalism and
willingness to move mountains to do what was ultimately the right thing in
removing Spacey. When all is said and done, the film may be best remembered for
what it almost was rather than what it actually is.” Rating: 3 out of 5
Molly’s Game tells the incredible true story of Molly Bloom (Jessica
Chastain), a brilliant former Olympic athlete who finds herself falling deep
into he world of illegal underground poker. The directorial debut of legendary
screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, this film is high-stakes captivating from start to
finish.
We Said: “It’s a character
study of a fearless woman who dared to strike out on her own and faced the full
power of male anger, not to mention the U.S. government, against her for doing
that. Molly’s Game is in top form when the focus can be narrowed to
her fight against the male-dominated establishment, and how she learned to
always deal herself a winning hand.” Rating:

Taraji P. Henson stars in this 70’s style action throwback as
Mary, a no nonsense hit woman whose life is turned upside when her path crosses
a yet again with a young boy from her past.
We Said: “I don’t blame
Taraji, nor do I put fault on Jahi Di’Allo Winston who has the makings of a
rising star. She’s fearless when given opportunity to show it, but it seems
like Najalfi wants to edit away the scenes where Mary shows vulnerability.
Actually, it seems like he wants to edit away anything that would give Proud
Mary any sense of style. And if there’s one thing we can say about
Taraji P. Henson is that she has style. She deserves a better chance to show it
than Proud
Mary affords her.” Rating: 2 out

During last year’s Westworld panel at Comic-Con, show creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy talked about the number of wild theories out there for season one. A lot of theories came really close to hitting the mark to becoming spoilers themselves, and that has posed an interesting problem as the series gears up for season two. So Nolan made a promise that he would get out in front of the spoiler problem by releasing on Reddit a video that would reveal every key plot point for next season up front, allowing those who want to know everything early a way for them to do it. Those who don’t would, theoretically, be able to avoid them without somebody tossing guesses around that prove to be accurate.
“We thought about this long and hard, and came to a difficult (and potentially highly controversial) decision. If you guys agree, we’re going to post a video that lays out the plot (and twists and turns) of season 2. Everything. The whole sordid thing. Up front. That way the members of the community here who want the season spoiled for them can watch ahead, and then protect the rest of the community, and help to distinguish between what’s ‘theory’ and what’s spoiler.”
Still, that’s just crazy, right? And certainly HBO wouldn’t allow them to take such a drastic step. Well, wrong. Nolan followed through in the below video, a whopping 25-minute beast that starts off very realistically with Jeffrey Wright explaining where his character Bernard is at the start of the season. And then at around the 1:30 mark…well, it becomes something very different.

“Disturbing.” “Brave.” “Controversial.” “Powerful.” All words I heard used at Sundance to describe The Tale, Jennifer Fox’s semi-autobiographical drama detailing a history of sexual abuse in her past. The film stars Laura Dern, who by all accounts gives an incredible performance, and was picked up by HBO for $7M at the festival. And now they’re putting that money to use by unveiling the new trailer.
Dern plays a cinematic version of Fox, a documentary filmmaker who comes to realize that the cherished relationship she had with her horseback riding instructor (Elizabeth Debicki) and track coach (Jason Ritter) was actually a case of sexual abuse. The younger version of Fox was played by Isabelle Nélisse, but an adult body double was used in the scenes in which Ritter’s character molests Fox. It’s these scenes that garnered the most attention for how unflinching they were, but also that they were done by a filmmaker recounting her own experiences.
HBO will premiere The Tale on May 26th. The film also stars Ellen Burstyn, Common, John Heard, Frances Conroy, and Isabella Amara.
The combination of Spike Lee and Get Out director Jordan Peele was always full of promise, and I think the newly-announced release date for their film, BlacKkKlansman shows that Focus Features wants to realize that potential. Focus has set the film for a summer release on August 10th 2018, but might it be seen even earlier?
There have been rumblings the Spike Lee-directed film could play at Cannes when it opens next month, and that seems like a distinct possibility now. Lee has taken a few movies to the festival before, Do the Right Thing, Girl 6, and Jungle Fever, so it wouldn’t be his first time by a long shot.
BlacKkKlansman is directed by Lee, produced by Peele, and is a co-production with Blumhouse, who also worked on Get Out. The film stars John David Washington as Ron Stallworth, the real-life Colorado Springs police officer who was the first African-American on the force. Along with his partner Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) they infiltrated the highest levels of the KKK to thwart its attempt to take over the city. Laura Harrier (Spider-Man: Homecoming) and Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3) co-star.
The August 10th date isn’t random, either. It’s also the one-year anniversary of the Charlottesville protests.
