‘The Kid Who Would Be King’ Trailer: Joe Cornish Returns With A Classic Fantasy-Adventure Tale

Remember Joe Cornish? He was red hot after directing the fun and zippy alien invasion flick Attack the Block seven years ago, and found his name on practically every major studio’s wish list. Other than helping to write the first Ant-Man script he never really settled into a groove, and even now his latest movie The Kid Who Would Be King seems to be flying under the radar. Unless you paid attention to this from the very beginning you might not know he was involved.

Cornish’s first directorial effort since 2011, The Kid Who Would Be King is a classic kids’ adventure tale, with wizards, swords, magic, and more. The film stars Louis Serkis (Andy Serkis’ son) as a regular boy who finds his everyday problems dwarfed by the discovery of the sword Excalibur. Now this everyday kid must use his newfound power to thwart a medievel villain bent on destroying the world.

Yep, classic stuff, and the trailer looks like the kind of thing I would have eaten up as a child.  The rest of the cast includes Patrick Stewart, Rebecca Ferguson, and Tom Taylor.

The Kid Who Would Be King opens March 1st 2019.

Idris Elba Is Joining The Cast Of ‘Cats’, Instantly Becomes Its Coolest Castmember

Idris Elba is trading in Heimdall’s sword for feline claws, joining the cast of Tom Hooper’s adaptation of Cats. Not the casting I ever would’ve expected, but sure, why the Hell not? Elba can do no wrong, right? Unless you saw Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, that is.

Anyway, Elba joins Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, and Ian McKellen in the screen version of Andrew Lloyd Webbber’s classic musical about a group of alley cats who meet to perform the Jellicle Ball, a ritual that will help the Jellicle leader decide which cat ascends to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. Elba will play antagonist Macavity, a master criminal who leads a band of mischievous cats in the kidnapping of Old Deuteronomy.

The original Broadway musical won seven Tony Awards and held the record as the longest-running show.  Hooper has been trying to make this movie for years, but it took his success on Les Miserables, and a helping hand from exec-producer Steven Spielberg, that finally made it happen. Cats will hit theaters on December 20th 2019. [Deadline]

Honest Trailer For The Satisfying But Forgettable ‘Ant-Man And The Wasp’

Marvel’s timing on Ant-Man and the Wasp couldn’t have been weirder. They’d just ripped everyone’s heart out with the conclusion to Avengers: Infinity War, and they decided to follow that up with an enjoyable, but utterly disposable, heist comedy? Uh, okay?  The latest Honest Trailer can’t quite figure out what was going on here, either, but they have the most fun with fans who complained too much about it.

“I don’t get out of bed for anything less than a Celestial.”

That’s pretty funny, and probably not that far off from the way some actually think. Otherwise this is a passable entry from the Screen Junkies. These Honest Trailers lost their edge a long time ago, but occasionally they’re still worth checking out. Basically I watch them for the clever puns at the end.

‘Annabelle 3’ Will Bring Back Patrick Wilson And Vera Farmiga As The Warrens

The Conjuring universe wouldn’t be anything without Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal sleuths Ed and Lorraine Warren, but with so many successful spinoffs it’s easy to forget that. When the plot of the Annabelle threequel was revealed to center on the Warrens’ 10-year-old daughter, it seemed inevitable they would return, as well, but it wasn’t set in stone until now.

Wilson and Farmiga will return for Annabelle 3, which will star McKenna Grace as their 10-year-old daughter who is under threat from the demonic doll first introduced in The Conjuring.  The script is written by Gary Dauberman, who has worked his horror magic already on It and It: Chapter 2, the first two Annabelle movies, and the franchise’s biggest hit, The Nun. On this film he’ll not only write but make his directorial debut.

There’s also The Conjuring 3 in the works which will focus on a new supernatural event from the Warrens’ case file. The spinoffs will continue with The Crooked Man, and an inevitable sequel to The Nun.

Annabelle 3 opens July 3rd 2019.  [Deadline]

Is s Sequel to ‘They Live’ On Its Way?

They Live is one of the quintessential 80’s cult classics. The John Carpenter directed sci-fi action flick, starring Roddy Piper, revolves around a world where aliens have taken human form in an effort to make people consume, oh and you can only see them with special Ray Ban’s..because, the 80’s. The whole thing was a send up of Reagan’s America and our ultra consuming ways. Politics aside it was a really fun movie that, if nothing else, gave us the line “I’ve come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I’m all outta bubblegum”…I mean, c’mon no Oscar for that writing?!?!

John Carpenter is doing rounds for the new Halloween and during a conversation with those awesome guys over at Den of Geek, they got on the subject of the They Live remake that Matt Reeves was working on. While that version is dead Carpenter was tight lipped on how he’d approach the subject nowadays saying:

“Well, I’m not gonna tell you about that, because it might be closer to reality than you think.”

Yeah…it’s not exactly solid evidence but Carpenter is not really the kind of guy that says things like this for no reason. Honestly, given the Kardashian/Trump/Celeb-centric world we live in the subject matter of They Live seems even more at home today then it did in the 80’s. I mean, can you imagine a character seeing the celebrities the idolize exposed as skinless monsters? It’s not that much of a stretch for some!

John Cena Will Fight Wildfires In Family Comedy ‘Playing With Fire’

Just as I’m about to fly out the door to see John Cena rock the 100th episode of Smackdown Live, Mr. Hustle Loyalty Respect has lined up a new acting role. Variety reports Cena is close to signing on to Playing with Fire, a family comedy that will fit in with his all-ages persona.

Penned by Matt Lieberman, the film follows “a group of rugged wildfire fighters who meet their match when they rescue a trio of rambunctious children.” Dan Ewen wrote the original spec before Lieberman gave it a rewrite.  No word on a director yet.

Not much else is known about the project, or how long this will keep Cena away from the squared circle. He’s been less of a presence on WWE TV lately as his acting career has taken off. He was seen earlier this year in the hit comedy, Blockers, and will have a role in the upcoming Bumblebee movie.

New ‘Child’s Play’ TV Series Details Revealed

There’s so much going on with the Child’s Play franchise that it’s sometimes hard to keep track. In short, there’s so much love out there for Chucky that one franchise can’t sustain it. So MGM has a remake on the way that will do something different with the killer doll, while series creator Don Mancini has a TV series that will stick to the prior established continuity, picking up after the events of 2017’s Cult of Chucky.

I can’t even begin to talk about all of the wacky crap that went down in that movie, but let’s keep it simple and say it gives Chucky the ability to possess other dolls, which opens up a ton of storyline possibilities that Mancini plans to pick up on. He described his plan to fans attending the recent Screamfest…

“We deliberately ended Cult with a bunch of cliffhangers to set up a TV series. Because there are so many different threads now, television could best accommodate that so that was done intentionally. At the same time, we have a whole new world, a bunch of new characters which we can say nothing about.”

Producer and Chucky designer David Kirschner added, “The only thing I think we can say is from the original film that Don wrote, Child’s Play, we are playing with that concept again, the idea of child’s play. I’ll let you guys fill in the pieces of that.”

Sounds like there will be an actual kid in the mix, like with Andy Barclay in the original movie.

Mancini continued, “So this time not by merely changing genre but by changing medium. This will give us a different kind of canvas, a much bigger canvas to explore characters and relationships.”

The Child’s Play movies have grown to encompass a ton of different characters, and the plots have become increasingly bizarre. While I don’t see how it works as a TV series I’m interested in seeing Mancini try.  [BloodyDisgusting]

‘The Aftermath’ Trailer: Keira Knightley & Alexander Skarsgard Share A Post-WWII Romance

I adored James Kent’s 2014 adaptation Testament of Youth, which featured Alicia Vikander in what I still think is her best role. Kent’s been away doing TV stuff for a few years, but he’s back on the big screen now with The Aftermath, and it looks like he’ll be pulling the same magic with Keira Knightley.

Set in post-WWII Germany, The Aftermath stars Keira Knightley alongside Alexander Skarsgard and Jason Clarke. She plays Rachel, the wife of a British colonel helping to rebuild a devastated Germany. Their marriage is on the rocks, and the situation gets worse when she develops feelings for one of the German houseguests her husband has allowed to stay in their home.

Besides the on screen talent there are some tremendous folks behind the scenes, such as Ridley Scott as a producer and the screenplay by Anna Waterhouse and Joe Shrapnel, who together previously wrote Race and the upcoming Kristen Stewart drama Against All Enemies.  Rhidian Brook, author of the book the film is based on, helped co-write the script.

The Aftermath opens April 26th 2019.

‘Miss Bala’ Trailer: Gina Rodriguez Stars In A Remake Of The Acclaimed Mexican Thriller

Gina Rodriguez entered the hearts of millions with her role in CW’s Jane the Virgin, but over the last couple of years she’s been making moves on the big screen with supporting performances in Deepwater Horizon and Annihilation. But now she has a chance to really step up on her own in the action thriller Miss Bala, a remake of the acclaimed Mexican film from 2011.

This version of Miss Bala is directed by Catherine Hardwicke in her first film since 2015’s Miss You Already, and largely follows the plot of the original. Rodriguez plays a young beauty who witnesses a murder in Tijuana, and is forced to do whatever it takes to survive a deadly situation involving a Mexican cartel and the DEA.  The film co-stars Anthony Mackie and Ismael Cruz Cordova.

The original movie debuted at Cannes and went on to become Mexico’s entry for the 2012 Best Foreign Language Oscar. Hardwicke’s movie doesn’t look like it has the same lofty aspirations, but a solid, fast-paced crowd pleaser that could be the start of something great for Rodriguez.

Miss Bala opens February 1st 2019.
