Review: ‘Feast Of The Seven Fishes’, A Christmas Dinner You Don’t Want To Miss

With Last Christmas
and now Feast of the Seven Fishes, the holiday movie season is officially upon us! It is a couple of days before
Christmas in 1983 and Tony Oliverio (Skyler Gisondo) is in a rut. He’s gotten
into art school but immediately decides to decline so he can continue working
in his family’s restaurant. On top of that, he’s single for another holiday
season. On a bright note, the Oliverio’s traditional Christmas Eve feast – the
feast of the seven fishes – is right around the corner so that will be a great,
and delicious, celebration. Tony’s cousin Angelo (Andrew Schulz) convinces Tony
to come out with him and his girl Sarah (Jessica Darrow). Apparently, Sarah has
a friend Beth (Madison Iseman) that Angelo and Sarah want to introduce to Tony
and see if the sparks fly. Beth has been dating Prentice (Allen Williamson) a
rich and pretentious schmuck from school that her parents absolutely approve of
because he can provide the life they want for Beth. Prentice has decided to go
on a skiing trip instead of joining Beth for the holidays and that is not
something she is willing to forgive. Sarah convinces Beth to come out with her
that night and meet Angelo’s cute cousin Tony and put Prentice squarely in the
rearview mirror, which she eventually agrees to.
Tony and Beth hit if off and end up having a great night together
– except for one stop at the strip club where Tony gets into a fight trying to
convince his ex-girlfriend Katie (Addison Timlin) to stay off the pole. While
that might be a turnoff to some, Beth found it sweet – she must have the heart
of a saint. Tony’s uncle Frankie (Joe Pantoliano) does what Tony doesn’t have
the stones to do and invites Beth to the Oliverio’s feast of the seven fishes. Of
course Beth accepts the initiation – she just met Tony the night before, so the
next logical step is to meet his whole family during date #2. Beth doesn’t realize the night
that she just signed up for – the Oliverio family have this feast down to a
science and she is in for a night she, or her stomach, won’t soon forget.

Feast of the Seven
Fishes
has a lot going for it and at the top of the list is the score. The music
seems to really drive the film and couldn’t be more enjoyable – it manages to
not only capture the holiday spirit, but also be quirky and punchy to match the
film’s characters. That is not easy to do, and Feast of the Seven Fishes hits it out of the park. Throughout the film, we keep meeting more and more of the Oliverio family, which is full of fantastic
characters. The banter and interactions of Tony’s uncles Frankie and Carmine
(Ray Abruzzo) and grandpa Johnny (Paul Ben-Victor) are a blast to watch while
Beth’s interactions with Tony’s ultra-religious and old school grandma Nonnie
(Lynn Cohen) are hilarious as well as slightly terrifying. Robert Tinnell, who
wrote and directed the film as well as the original graphic novel of the same
name, interjects the spirit of graphic novels throughout the film – which is a
unique and welcomed addition. Feast of
the Seven Fishes
is a good-hearted and enjoyable holiday movie and if you
have 90 minutes to kill, I’d definitely recommend a watch – the fish montage
alone is probably worth it.

‘Spies In Disguise’ Trailer: Will Smith Is One Fly Super Spy

Between the two of them, Will Smith and Tom Holland have helped save the world a few times over. But it’s only in the new animated film Spies in Disguise where we can see them teamup for the first time, and with Smith as a super-spy-turned-pigeon.

The latest (and hopefully last) trailer for Spies in Disguise is pretty straight forward, and only seems to exist to show off the new track by Mark Ronson and Anderson .Paak. The voice cast includes Rashida Jones, Ben Mendelsohn, Reba McEntire, Rachel Brosnahan, Karen Gillan, DJ Khaled, and Masi Oka, with directors Troy Quane and Nick Bruno making their debut.

Twentieth Century Fox presents a Blue Sky Studios production, “Spies in Disguise,” an animated spy comedy adventure set in the slick, high-octane, globe-trotting world of international espionage. Super spy Lance Sterling (Will Smith) and scientist Walter Beckett (Tom Holland) are almost exact opposites. Lance is smooth, suave and debonair. Walter is…not. But when events take an unexpected turn, this unlikely duo is forced to team up for the ultimate mission that will require an almost impossible disguise-transforming Lance into the brave, fierce, majestic…pigeon. Walter and Lance suddenly have to work as a team, or the whole world is in peril.

Spies in Disguise opens Christmas Day. You can pre-order the film’s soundtrack here.

Ben Affleck And Gal Gadot Want The “Snyder Cut” Of “Justice League’ Released, Too

Yesterday marked the two-year anniversary of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a film that will go down in infamy as one of the biggest disasters ever. But since then, there have been increasing calls for release of the “Snyder Cut”, the version of the film Snyder was working on when he had to step aside for personal reasons, only to be replaced by Joss Whedon. Snyder has found quite a lot of support to see this happen, and now he’s got Wonder Woman and Batman on his side.

Gal Gadot and Ben Affleck both took time to hashtag for the Snyder Cut’s release by Warner Bros. Will having the support of the movie’s two biggest stars, not to mention huge favorites by the studio, move the ball forward on this?

The answer is probably going to be “No”.  While the outcry may be loud, I think most fans are happy to simply forget Justice League ever happened. Things have improved in just about every way since that movie bombed. What would be the possible upside for WB to revisit it? Kevin Smith may have assured us the Snyder Cut exists, albeit in uncompleted form, but the chances of it actually being released are slim, regardless of Snyder’s tweet claiming Wonder Woman and Batman “can’t be wrong.”

Lupita Nyong’o Won’t Be Starring In John Woo’s ‘The Killer’ Remake, After All

It’s been another banner year for Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o, who has earned raves and possible awards season love for her role in Us, not to mention praise for her zombie-killing prowess in Little Monsters. But it turns out 2019 will also see be a year in  which she had to drop out of two high-profile roles. She couldn’t work out a deal to join James Bond film No Time to Die, and now it looks like her anticipated role in John Woo’s remake of The Killer has fallen through.

Woo revealed the news at the Hawaii International Film Festival (I’m gonna need to attend that one) where he was to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. According to Woo, scheduling conflicts are the cause of Nyong’o dropping out, but he still intends to cast a leading lady for his redo of his violent Hong Kong classic that starred Chow Yun-fat.

“There was a scheduling problem because she’s so popular right now! We rewrote the script and it took so much time…she had to leave for another project. The biggest reason why I wanted to do this movie again because [I wanted] ‘the killer’ to be a woman — that’s exciting to me. It will make the movie have a different look.”

Nyong’o still has the female-led spy flick 355 coming up in January 2021, so we won’t be without seeing her in another kick-ass role. [Deadline]

Box Office:’Ford v Ferrari’ Outraces ‘Charlie’s Angels’ With $31M

1. Ford v Ferrari (review)- $31M
James Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari zoomed into the Oscar race with a killer $31M opening weekend. Led by the starry duo of Matt Damon and Christian Bale, this looks like an honest-to-goodness blockbuster that doubles as a prestige drama. These kinds of movies don’t come around much during the year, and rarely hit the ground running the way this one did. The reviews have been good-to-great across the board (I absolutely loved it), earning the buzz these films need to survive in a loaded crowd of awards season contenders. Disney has to be happy, finally scoring the box office hit they hoped for when acquiring Fox.  Worldwide it has $52M.
2. Midway– $8.7M/$35.1M
3. Charlie’s Angels (review)- $8.6M
The latest reboot of Charlie’s Angels failed to take flight with just $8.6M. Oof. The latest take on the trio of female super-spies fell way short of the McG-directed versions from 2000 and 2003, which opened with $40M and $37M respectively, this despite an all-new trio of Kristen Stewart, Ella Balinska, and Naomi Scott. Elizabeth Banks wrote, directed, and starred in this version, which joins Terminator Dark Fate and Doctor Sleep as relaunches of older franchises that have gone nowhere lately.  I have my theories on why this one failed so badly. The previous films starred three red-hot actresses coming together almost like a female Justice League in a movie that was as cheeky as it gets, while this one’s biggest name is Stewart who is long past being a big draw. Banks wasn’t playing into the sex appeal of her cast, which was a big part of the reason for previous films’ success. I’m not saying her approach was a mistake, I quite liked what she and her stars did, but others may have been wanting one thing and got another.
4. Playing with Fire– $8.5M/$25.4M
5. Last Christmas– $6.7M/$22.5M
6. Doctor Sleep– $6.1M/$25M
7. The Good Liar (review)- $5.65M
I’m disappointed to see the $5.6M weekend for Bill Condon’s The Good Liar, an excellent little cat-and-mouse thriller led by two of our best, Ian McKellen and Helen Mirren. The good news it was only a $10M investment, and it’s already made a few more million overseas so this won’t be a total loss. I just don’t want to see this movie vanish because it’s seriously a lot of fun, and people shouldn’t be thrown off assuming it’s dull and stuffy because of the casting. That would be a terrible mistake.
8. Joker– $5.63M/$322.5M
Joker continues to break records all around the world. It’s now broken the $1B barrier and become the biggest earner to never play in China. I’m on record predicting it will do better than Matt Reeves’ The Batman when that movie comes out in a couple of years, which is just wild to think about.
9. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil- $5.2M/$106M
10. Harriet– $4.7M/$31.8M

Patrick Wilson Says He’ll Return As Orm In ‘Aquaman 2’

After Aquaman earned $1.1B for Warner Bros., shocking pretty much everybody who ever thought the DC Comics character was a joke, it was inevitable that we’d get a sequel. And we are, with James Wan returning and, of course, Jason Momoa leading the way. But the rest of the band is getting back together, too, and that includes Patrick Wilson as Aquaman’s brother/nemesis Orm the Ocean Master.

Speaking with THR, Wilson confirmed he’d be back for more sibling rivalry with Momoa’s Arthur Curry…

“I’m slightly briefed [on Orm-related matters]. I just throw a little dart here and there. I’ll say, ‘So, what about this?’ and [James Wan will] say, ‘Well, this is what I’m thinking.’ I can tell you that even his concepts for Aquaman 2 are pushing it even further.”

Wan and Wilson are close pals at this point, having worked on a handful of The Conjuring films together.  I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Orm’s role go even bigger for Aquaman 2, which has a lot to live up to.  So far we haven’t heard much about the sequel as it’s still a few years away. Before that, we should see the horror spinoff, The Trench, which Wan is also involved.

Wilson can be seen in theaters right now as part of Roland Emmerich’s WWII film, Midway. Aquaman 2 opens on December 16th 2022.

Disney Reveals Five New Marvel Dates Through 2023

Those who complain Disney has a stranglehold over Hollywood are going to start hating days like today, because the Mouse House has unveiled a whole bunch of upcoming release dates. Included in that are new untitled Marvel films in 2023, and other high-profile projects we’ve been waiting to check out. Here we go.

So let’s just start with what everyone is here for and that’s Marvel. The rest of Disney’s dates you can find here. There are five (!!!) new Marvel Studios films coming with four of them in 2023, which is just….geezus that’s a lot. Anyway, here are the dates:

October 7th 2022
February 17th 2023
May 5th 2023
July 28th 2023
November 3rd 2023

We have no idea what those are, but there’s room for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the Blade reboot with Mahershala Ali, and Captain Marvel 2 which I think is a lock for that February 7th 2023 slot. And while I’ve been hesitant to look too deep into any Fantastic Four and X-Men relaunches, this is far enough ahead that I think it’s safe to assume they will occupy a couple of these dates.

Below you’ll find the confirmed list of upcoming Marvel films:

Black Widow – May 1, 2020
The Eternals – November 6, 2020
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – February 21, 2021
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – May 7, 2021
Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel – July 16, 2021
Thor: Love and Thunder – November 5, 2021
Black Panther 2 – May 6, 2022

It’ll Be Nicolas Cage As Nicolas Cage In Meta Film ‘The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent’

In recent posts about Nicolas Cage I’ve commented on the escalating weirdness of his projects, which were already Goddamn strange since he became such a straight-to-VOD warrior. Whether he’s plotting murders during hurricanes, battling exotic animals and assassins on a boat, or facing Lovecraftian extraterrestrials, Cage may be about to embark on his weirdest movie yet…because he’ll be playing himself.

In what sounds like some Being John Malkovich meta shit, Cage is in talks to star in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which might be the greatest title ever that isn’t Bone Tomahawk. Directed and co-written by Tom Gormican (That Awkward Moment), the film would find Cage playing himself, who is desperate to land a role in a Quentin Tarantino movie while dealing with a strained relationship with his daughter. In truly self-aware fashion, Cage also talks to an egotistical 1990s version of himself who hates that he now makes a bunch of crappy movies and is no longer a star.

And that is just the beginning. From THR‘s report…

The Cage character is also under a mountain of debt and finds himself forced to make an appearance at the birthday party of a Mexican billionaire who happens to be a fan of Cage’s work and secretly hopes to show him a script on which he’s been working.

While he bonds with the man, Cage is informed by the CIA that the billionaire is actually a drug cartel kingpin who has kidnapped the daughter of a Mexican presidential nominee, and is recruited by the U.S. government to get intelligence. The situation spirals even more dramatically when the Mexican brings over Cage’s daughter and his ex-wife for a reconciliation, and when their lives are on the line, Cage takes on the role of a lifetime.

Yo. I need this movie right now. The good news is, Cage doesn’t turn a lot of shit down so we know he’ll sign on. And I know from experience that Cage is very aware of the path his career has taken so he should have a ton of fun doing this movie, which will reference some of his most iconic films such as Leaving Las Vegas and Face/Off.  The film is close to being picked up by Lionsgate, beating out several big-money suitors, which will make this Cage’s first lead role in a major studio film in years.

Marvel’s ‘What If…?’ Will Bring Robert Downey Jr. Back As Iron Man

Just because Tony Stark met his fate at the end of Avengers: Endgame doesn’t mean we’ve seen or heard the last of Robert Downey Jr. The MCU’s MVP isn’t done with the role by any stretch. At San Diego Comic-Con it was revealed that most of the original Marvel actors would return to voice their characters in the animated Disney+ series, What If…?, and one whose name was not on that list was Downey. Well, that has now changed.

According to Thor: Ragnarok‘s Jeff Goldblum in a Buzzfeed interview, Downey will return to voice Tony Stark in an upcoming episode of What If…? that will also feature Taika Waititi returning as Korg.
“I played the part again a couple of days ago. I went to the Disney studios and I recorded the Grandmaster’s voice for an episode of a show that’s gonna be on Disney+ that’s called What If…?. It’s an animated version of all the characters we know and love from Marvel and this episode included the Grandmaster and Iron Man, so Robert Downey will do a voice for that, and Korg. Taika Waititi had already recorded his voice for that, so yeah, for a couple hours I enjoyed doing that.

The very nature of What If…? opens up a ton of possibilities for Iron Man’s return, but chances are Downey won’t be voicing the version we know and love. He might have taken the super-soldier serum and become Captain America. Or maybe he’s been deemed worthy of carrying Mjolnir? Anything is possible and that’s what makes this series so cool.
What If…? comes to Disney+ in summer 2021.

A ‘Joker’ Sequel Would Need “Thematic Resonance” For Todd Phillips To Return

Joker currently sits at $995M worldwide, just shy of crossing the $1B mark and becoming the first R-rated film to do so. It’s crazy to think this movie that nobody was very sure about a year ago could cross into being the most profitable comic book movie ever, and yet here we are. And of course, Warner Bros. wants to do a sequel because, well, obviously. But director Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix haven’t really been open to it unless it’s for something special, and in a new LA Times piece both talk about what that might be…

“In the second or third week of shooting, I was like, ‘Todd, can you start working on a sequel? There’s way too much to explore,’” Phoenix said. “It was kind of in jest — but not really.”

“But it couldn’t just be this wild and crazy movie about the ‘Clown Prince of Crime,’” said Phillips. “It would have to have some thematic resonance in a similar way that this does.”

It would be VERY tough for a Joker sequel to have the same impact. We would no longer be seeing the transformation of a regular joe into one of comics’ most notorious villains. The social commentary that is so much a part of the film wouldn’t resonate the same way, either…

Phillips continued, “Because I think that’s ultimately why the movie connected, it’s what’s going on underneath. So many movies are about the spark, and this is about the powder. If you could capture that again in a real way, that would be interesting.”

No matter what these guys say, I’m sure Warner Bros. will find a way to make this happen, and they’ll connect it to Matt Reeves’ The Batman, too. Just a hunch.
