JJ Abrams Piles On ‘The Last Jedi’, Criticizes Film’s “Meta” Approach

With The Rise of Skywalker only days away, suddenly there’s been a flurry of stories bashing the previous film, The Last Jedi. A target since Rian Johnson directed the divisive film, it’s suddenly being hit with renewed attacks by the Star Wars cast, including Daisy Ridley and most-recently John Boyega. Even JJ Abrams is piling on now with his comments to NY Times, which suggest his movie is going to veer wildly in the opposite direction from Johnson’s.

The issue with The Last Jedi has nothing to do with box office or critical reviews. It’s mostly fan reaction to Johnson’s handling of seemingly major plot threads, such as Rey’s parentage and the fate of Luke Skywalker. Every decision Johnson made has set off a certain segment of fans who feel he took a dismissive approach, waving these storylines away as unimportant. Abrams actually has praise for Johnson initially, saying it was “full of surprises and subversion and all sorts of bold choices.”

He then delivers the unexpected right cross, “On the other hand, it’s a bit of a meta approach to the story. I don’t think that people go to ‘Star Wars’ to be told, ‘This doesn’t matter.’”

I would disagree with Abrams’ assessment of what Johnson did. That Rey is, at least for now, just an orphan of unknown parentage is as meaningful to her as anything else might’ve been. I suspect Abrams will change all of that, however.

He does add that The Last Jedi was vitally important to creating “a story that I think needed a pendulum swing in one direction in order to swing in the other.”

Whether intentional or not (and I definitely think it’s intentional), there are jabs at The Last Jedi everywhere. Ridley said she “cried” upon learning of Abrams’ return, because he added a sense of structure and security…the implication being that Johnson did not.

Boyega continued expressing his dissatisfaction that the story which Abrams began in The Force Awakens took a detour under Johnson’s guidance. He said, “Even as a normal person in the audience, I wanted to see where that story was going,”

Ridley’s comments about stability and structure are interesting because, apparently, the day-to-day of crafting The Rise of Skywalker weren’t particularly stable. The article notes a process that saw “a behind-the-scenes process in which major plot elements and whole swaths of dialogue were being reworked up to and on the days they were filmed.”  If this were any other movie with a detail like that, we’d see thinkpieces written about the movie’s inevitable failure, but nobody wants that kind of bad mojo surrounding the end of the Skywalker Saga.

All I’m going to say is constantly attacking The Last Jedi doesn’t make me want to see The Rise of Skywalker any more or less. JJ Abrams is a very different filmmaker than Rian Johnson, and nobody thought he was going to make the same kind of movie. When this is over I just hope this trilogy makes sense, both directors’ visions come together cohesively, and the story ends in a way that’s satisfying. We’ll find out on December 20th.

‘The Mandalorian’: Bryce Dallas Howard Reveals Pedro Pascal Isn’t Always Under The Helmet

Nobody knows what The Mandalorian looks like underneath his helmet. We assume he looks like actor Pedro Pascal, but…well, does he really? Because although Pascal was cast as Baby Yoda’s protector, he’s not always the guy playing the role.

Bryce Dallas Howard revealed to Vulture that Pascal wasn’t in the episode she directed, titled “Sanctuary”.  I don’t know why this is surprising, and yet it kinda is…

“He was in rehearsals for ‘King Lear’ on Broadway. And so, while we were doing my episode, I wasn’t working with Pedro,” she said.

Stunt doubles are one thing; we expect them to step in for certain action sequences and the like, but not to just take over the role like an understudy. If you look at the episode’s credits you’ll see Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder are indeed credited for the role. Wayne, in particular, earned praise from Howard for what he brought to the table…

“He absolutely just brought everything to that character, and we were able to find the moments and figure them out together.”

Hey, if Howard hadn’t said anything most of wouldn’t be the wiser, which goes to show that…well, Pascal ain’t needed. Disney, you can go ahead and cancel his contract.  Nah, it’s a sign of the amount of work that’s being put into The Mandalorian that Pascal’s absence doesn’t derail anything.

Warner Bros. Sets ‘The Matrix 4’ In 2021; ‘The Flash’ Finally Gets Dated, Too

While the entire year hasn’t been great for Warner Bros., they’re riding high on the unexpected $1B+ of Joker, and the buzz surrounding Wonder Woman 1984. Now’s as good a time as any to drop info on two franchises they hope will continue the upward swing: The Matrix 4 and, of all things, The Flash.

It’ll be nearly two decades after The Matrix Revolutions when we’ll see The Matrix 4 in theatres, arriving on May 21st 2021. Lana Wachowski is behind the camera for this mysterious chapter of the groundbreaking sci-fi franchise, which brings back Keanu Reeves as Neo, Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, and Jada Pinkett-Smith as Niobe. Newcomers include Watchmen star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II possibly as a young Morpheus (please no), Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, Jonathan Groff, and newest addition Toby Onwumere.
So a couple of interesting things about the Matrix‘s date: it arrives on the same day as John Wick: Chapter 4, possibly setting up a Keanu vs. Keanu showdown. Don’t worry, somebody’s gotta back off…right?  Also, Matrix takes the date formerly occupied by Warner Bros.’ live-action Akira, which Taika Waititi is supposed to be directing. However, that’s up in the air now that he’s taking on Thor: Love & Thunder. Akira is once again off the schedule and in limbo, where it has been for more years than I care to count.
And The Flash may actually be happening! At least, this is the surest sign-of-life we’ve heard of it in ages. Ezra Miller will suit up as the scarlet speedster on July 1st 2022, joining Aquaman 2 as the other DCEU movie set for that year.  The long-delayed, much-troubled film has It: Chapter Two director Andy Muschietti on board, making him the first attached filmmaker to score a release date.

‘Hillary’ Trailer: Hillary Clinton Goes Deep In Hulu’s Sundance Documentary

Hillary Clinton is coming to Sundance. Or at least I would expect her to be there, with the upcoming documentary Hillary announced as part of the festival’s slate. And given the way Clinton has been living her best life since the 2016 Presidential election, and subsequently being proven right that Trump is nothing more than a Russian puppet, I fully expect she’ll be at the snowy climes of Park City next month. Hopefully, I can snag a photo.

Anyway., the new trailer for Hulu’s documentary series has arrived and it really looks to be a warts-and-all look at Clinton’s life and career. She’s been a public figure for decades, beginning with her work during the Watergate hearings, then as a First Lady, a U.S. Senator, Secretary of State, and of course, as the most wronged Presidential candidate in history. But even at her most popular, Clinton has always been the kind of person that attracts extreme reactions, and director Nanette Burstein isn’t shying away from exploring why that is.

SYNOPSIS: A portrait of a public woman, interweaving moments from never-before-seen 2016 campaign footage with biographical chapters of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s life. Featuring exclusive interviews with Hillary herself, Bill, Chelsea, friends, and journalists, an examination of how she became simultaneously one of the most admired and vilified women in the world.

After making its Sundance debut, Hillary will make its way to Hulu on March 6th.

‘Promising Young Woman’ Trailer: Carey Mulligan Is Out For Bloody Payback

Once territory largely owned by men, the revenge movie has been renewed in the wake of #MeToo by vengeance-seeking women against their predatory attackers. One need look no further than Hustlers, or on a more gruesome level The Nightingale, as just two examples of the genre’s timely resurgence. Well, the upcoming film Promising Young Woman takes that idea and ramps it up to the next degree, led by what appears to be a killer performance by Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan.

Directed by Emerald Fennell (Killing Eve) in her directorial debut, and produced by none other than Margot Robbie, Promising Young Woman doesn’t have a difficult premise to grasp. Mulligan plays Cassie, a traumatized woman who looks to set things right against any man who unfortunately gets in her way. And judging by the look of things, she’s going to go nuts in doing so, daresay almost Harley Quinn-esque in her approach.
SYNOPSIS: From visionary director Emerald Fennell comes a delicious new take on revenge. Everyone said Cassie (Carey Mulligan) was a promising young woman… until a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future.  But nothing in Cassie’s life is what it appears to be: she’s wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she’s living a secret double life by night. Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs of the past in this thrilling and wildly entertaining story.

Also starring Bo Burnham, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Clancy Brown, Promising Young Woman opens April 17th 2020.

‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ International Trailer Crosses The Streams With Slightly More Action And Humor

The trailer for Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife was released just days ago, and already the reactions to it are wide and varied. Some appreciate the nostalgic, Stranger Things-vibe they are clearly going with in this version, a true continuation from the classic Ghostbusters movies; while others are less certain this approach was worth scrapping the 2016 reboot which attempted something new. The jury will remain out until next summer, obviously, but a new international trailer is here to give us some small glimpses at new footage.

There’s a bit more humor in this trailer than in the previous one, but I still find the comedy aspect sorely lacking in everything we’ve seen. I hope the funny parts won’t be isolated to the appearances by returning guest stars Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts.

We also see more experimentation with the recovered proton pack by science whiz Phoebe (McKenna Grace) and her classmate (Logan Kim) who is rocking a familiar pair of goggles. The film also stars Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Paul Rudd.

SYNOPSIS: From director Jason Reitman and producer Ivan Reitman, comes the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. In Ghostbusters: Afterlife, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind. The film is written by Jason Reitman & Gil Kenan.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife opens July 10th 2020.

‘The Matrix 4’ Casts ‘Sense8’ And ‘Empire’ Actor Toby Onwumere

The Matrix 4 will reunite director Lana Wachowski with Toby Onwumere, one of the stars of her mind-bending sci-fi series, Sense8, so he should feel right at home in all of the high-concept weirdness that’s sure to unfold.

Deadline confirms the news of Onwumere’s casting, and of course we have no idea of his role. The actor was part of the second and final season of Sense8 on Netflix, but also had a recurring role on Empire.  He joins those who have already jumped into the Matrix, such as Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett, along with newcomers Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick, Neil Patrick Harris, and Jonathan Groff.

Meanwhile, The Matrix 4 might be shooting in San Francisco early next year, according to some of the city’s local outlets. That hasn’t been confirmed, however it does make sense for the famously LGBTQ-friendly city to welcome a production with two openly gay castmembers and a director who has undergone gender transition.

Say Bye-Bye To Marvel Television As It Finally Shuts Down

This will come as a shock to no one who has been paying attention the last few months, but Marvel Television is no more. The small-screen arm of Marvel Entertainment that gave rise to Agents of SHIELD, Agent Carter, Inhumans, Runaways, Marvel Netflix, and Cloak & Dagger is ceasing all production and joining Marvel Studios under the supervision of Kevin Feige.

Like I said, this surprises nobody. The writing has been on the wall ever since Feige took over full creative control and began launching live-action Marvel shows for Disney+ that he says are the first-ever to be connected to the MCU. That comment alone could’ve told you how he felt about what Marvel TV had been up to.

The final shows under the Jeph Loeb-era of Marvel TV will be Hulu’s animated shows such as Howard the Duck and Hit-Monkey (Tigra & Dazzler is already on hold), as well as live-action series Helstrom which I think many are expecting to evolve into a limited event series. Loeb will remain on board during the transition, but with layoffs coming I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s on the list.

Agents of SHIELD and Runaways are in production on their final seasons now. I guess all of this means Agent Coulson is still dead in the MCU, and we’ll never get to see the Old Lace vs. Thanos showdown we’ve been hoping for. [THR]

Creepy Kids and Keri Russel Highlight the Trailer for ‘Antlers’

Being that the great nation of America was built on their land (stolen land if we’re being direct) you’d think that we would at least honor the Native American’s by showcasing some of their amazing mythology and lore on the silver screen. I don’t know if the folks behind the new FOX Searchlight horror flick Antlers had this in mind or maybe they just realized the wealth of crazy stuff ripe for the adapting…whatever the case the movie is coming and it’s bringing with it a Wendigo. Those not in the Supernatural fan club like myself may be asking themselves what that is, so let me brief you.

The wendigo (/ˈwɛndɪɡoʊ/) or windigo (also wetiko) is a mythological man-eating creature or evil spirit from the folklore of the Native American Algonquian tribes based in the northern forests of Nova Scotia, the East Coast of Canada, and Great Lakes Region of Canada.  via Wikipedia

Sounds pretty damn metal right? Well, the movie looks like it’s going to capture at least a bit of that in this dark and moody trailer with the beautiful and talented Keri Russel running point (bonus points for dollar store Matt Damon being included), all while an eerie tribal chant plays in the background. This feels like one of those January/February movies that I may just end up liking.
