Superhero fatigue? Don’t say that to Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige, who sees a long future ahead for the MCU, despite declining box office of superhero movies in general. With Spider-Man: Brand New Day right around the corner, and Avengers: Doomsday in December, Feige had a lot to say about that future in a recent Weibo interview in Shanghai.
That Feige has a road map for the MCU isn’t a shock. It’s how far ahead it goes. Not just this decade, but the next and beyond…
“Our plan is… I haven’t told anyone this before […] We were just in a Marvel Studios meeting room, planning movies all the way up to 2042. Whether we can make it to 2042? Who knows? Will it be those movies? Who knows? But this is how we approach and plan the vast amount of potential stories in the comics.”
This isn’t quite true. Back in 2013, he admitted to having Marvel movies planned through 2021. Most of those happened as expected. So Feige is prone to doing this sort of thing.
So just how much will Spider-Man be part of that future? Feige talked about the next 2-5 Spidey movies as part of the arrangement with Sony Pictures, and talked about the successful Spider-Verse movies and the potential of a live-action Miles Morales film, something fans have been clamoring for…
“One of the interesting things in this line of work is that we’re always dreaming and coming up with all kinds of ideas. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, there’s a line where Electro [played by Jamie Foxx] says: ‘There must be a Black Spider-Man somewhere.’ Audiences around the world are thrilled because they know this might be a reference to Spider-Man Miles,” Feige said of the future of Miles in the MCU.
“The good news is that Sony has released the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse film series, which are beloved and excellent, and “Beyond the Spider-Verse” will also be released next year. But yes, we undoubtedly have plans , and I think the live-action Spider-Man movies are destined to join Miles at some point after the Spider-Verse series ends. We have also been thinking about and discussing more Spider-Man adventure stories, regardless of the terms or contracts. Our [co-producer] Amy Pascal is already working on it, and we’ve already discussed in depth what the next two, three, four, or five Spider-Man movies might make.”
A live-action Miles Morales movie in the MCU has to happen. The character was hinted at somewhat in Spider-Man: Homecoming with Donald Glover playing Miles’ uncle, Aaron, aka the villain known as Prowler. He reprised the role as a cameo in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
