Deconstructing the horror sequel is nothing new, and remains a successful approach to the genre as seen with Scream 7. Leave it to I Saw the TV Glow director Jane Schoenbrun to tackle it from a fresh perspective, exploring our fascination with pop culture, nostalgia, and the impact of media on queer identity with her new film, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma.
Hacks star Hannah Einbinder leads the cast as the director brought in to reinvigorate the Camp Miasma horror franchise after multiple crappy sequels and declining interest. This includes a spacebound chapter in a clear nod to Jason X from the Friday the 13th series. Gillian Anderson plays the star of the original movie who has since faded into the background, but when the two meet something bloody and orgasmic sparks between them.
A talented and somewhat quirky ensemble includes Amanda Fix, Arthur Conti, Sorry Baby creator Eva Victor, Zach Cherry, SNL breakout Sarah Sherman, Patrick Fischler, Dylan Baker, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Quintessa Swindell, Kevin McDonald, and Jack Haven.
SYNOPSIS: After years of slapdash sequels and waning fandom, the Camp Miasma slasher franchise is handed over to an enthusiastic young director for resurrection. But when she visits the original’s star, a now-reclusive actress shrouded in mystery, the two women fall into a blood-soaked world of desire, fear, and delirium.
MUBI will release Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma on August 7th.
