Following her role as Hawkgirl in James Gunn’s Superman, a starring role in Alien: Romulus, and key part as Dina in The Last of Us season two, Isabela Merced is more in demand than ever. Next up is another franchise, House of the Dead, Paul W. S. Anderson’s feature film remake of the hit SEGA video game.
Deadline reports that a new House of the Dead is being shopped around at the European Film Market, with Merced attached to star. Anderson, who worked wonders turning Capcom’s Resident Evil zombie games into a blockbuster franchise, will produce. Merced is also attached as exec-producer.
Released into arcades in 1997, House of the Dead was a fast-paced horror shooter game that was revolutionary for its lightning quick undead hordes, which inspired such films as Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead, World War Z, and more.
Uwe Boll directed a terrible, low-budget adaptation released in 2003. It only made $13M globally but grew to become a cult favorite as many Boll films tend to do.
Anderson said in a statement:
“‘The House of the Dead’ is a game I have loved for many years, and I’m beyond thrilled to be bringing this to the big screen with such an exciting talent as Isabela at its heart. We envisage this as the start of a tentpole franchise which can explore the rich world and lore that Sega has created over a whole series of films.”
