The Substance rightfully gained critical acclaim for its use of horror to comment on Hollywood’s impossible beauty standards for women. But another theme coursing through it was a person’s worth, their value, as they grow older. It’s an idea that gets explored further in Nadia Conners’ dramedy The Uninvited, a starry affair that premiered at SXSW last year and will finally be released next month.
Starring Walton Goggins, Elisabeth Reaser, Pedro Pascal, Lois Smith, Eva DeDominci, and Rufus Sewell, The Uninvited finds an unexpected guest crashing a dinner party held at the home of an actress-turned-homemaker and her agent husband. The arrival forces long-standing tensions to emerge between the couple, as well as an examination of Hollywood’s beauty and aging standards.
The film is written and directed by Nadia Conners, Goggins’ wife and co-director of the Leonardo DiCaprio climate change doc, The 11th Hour.
Here’s the synopsis: THE UNINVITED is a comedic drama taking place over the course of one night in the Hollywood Hills, as Rose and Sammy’s party is interrupted by an unexpected stranger, Helen. This encounter, along with the presence of other complicated characters from her past and present, forces Rose to confront her insecurities and the loneliness of a deteriorating marriage. The film humorously critiques Hollywood’s beauty standards while celebrating the complexities of womanhood and explores the themes of motherhood, and self-discovery.
Foton Distribution will release The Uninvited in New York on April 11th and April 18th in Los Angeles and Miami.
