Christopher Nolan’s Mystery 2026 Film Is A “Mythic Action” Adaptation Of Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’

Considering Uberto Pasolini’s The Return with Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche is only weeks old in theaters, this news about Christopher Nolan’s upcoming project might be a bit disappointing. Or perhaps not, because Nolan will certainly tackle the subject in a much bigger way. Nolan’s mystery project set for 2026 is an adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey.

The news was revealed by Universal Pictures over social media, saying Nolan’s film “is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.”

Nolan has already assembled quite an all-star cast led by Matt Damon, joined by Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Charlize Theron. The likelihood is that Damon is playing Odysseus, the King of Ithaca and his journey home to his wife following the Trojan War. Presuming Nolan keeps all of the mythological aspects in the story (something Pasolini did not do), then expect to see Homer face sirens, cyclopses, man-eating giants, and a swarm of eager men looking to wed his wife who they believe is a widow.

So there we have it. Nolan, who will direct and write the screenplay, has never done a film quite like this before, and it could be awesome to see how he interprets Greek mythological adventure.
