Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey is in theaters now, and along with strong critical reviews, it’s projected to earn more than $120M at the box office. Not too shabby. The production was long and difficult, with Nolan shooting the entire thing using IMAX cameras. In fact, it was so tough that Nolan says he’ll be taking a longer break than usual before his next project.
Nolan has kept a steady schedule for much of his career, with three years between Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, Oppenheimer, and now The Odyssey. Speaking with Today, Nolan said it’ll be “at least” three years before he gets back behind the camera. Why? Because this one took him to the limits…
“I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina, I think. I mean, it’s ‘The Odyssey,’ of course it should be difficult,” The Oscar-winning director said. “We’re not doing the job right making a film of ‘The Odyssey’ if it doesn’t seem difficult.”
Who knows, though? Maybe Nolan will get passionate about something else and move up that timetable. In the meantime, do yourself a favor and see the fruits of Nolan’s labor in The Odyssey, and see it in IMAX, 70mm, whatever the best theater in your town might be. I know I plan to see it a couple more times, too.
