It might be up in the air whether Keanu Reeves suits up for John Wick 5, but the franchise isn’t going anywhere. There are still plenty of bullets to fly and lots of bad guys that need killing, and so we have the prequel series, The Continental, on the way, and also a big screen spinoff, Ballerina. In regards to that latter project, Lionsgate has given the Ana de Armas-led revenge flick an official release date.
According to THR, Ballerina will hit theaters on June 7th 2024. The film stars Armas as Rooney, an assassin from the same Ruska Roma criminal syndicate as John Wick. When killers murder her family, Rooney sets out to get some vengeance. Look for cameos from Keanu Reeves, Ian McShane, and the late Lance Reddick as events take place in the months between the last two John Wick movies
The film will be directed by Len Wiseman, best known for the Underworld movies and Live Free or Die Hard. Also in the cast are Norman Reedus, Gabriel Byrne, and Anjelica Huston who reprises her role as The Director. But for me, the casting that excites me most is French actress Anne Parillaud, who set the standard for female-led assassin flicks with La Femme Nikita in 1990. She’s incredibly choosy, so it’s good to see her back in a movie that probably wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for her.
