Wes Anderson fans, it’s time to rejoice. There will be not one but two Anderson films for you to enjoy this year. The first is his Roald Dahl adaptation The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, which will debut on Netflix this fall. Before that, Anderson’s 1950s-set romantic comedy Asteroid City will hit theaters, featuring possibly the most stacked cast he’s ever assembled.
Much of that cast is listed on the brand new Americana-inspired poster for Asteroid City, which likely heralds an upcoming trailer release. Jason Schwartzmann, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Tony Revolori, Edward Norton, Jeffrey Wright, and Jeff Goldblum, Scarlett Johansson, Bryan Cranston, Liev Schreiber, Margot Robbie, Tom Hanks, Hope Davis, Stephen Park, Rupert Friend, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Fisher Stevens, Matt Dillon, Hong Chau, Sophia Lillis, and Jake Ryan star, reuniting Anderson with some old friends while adding some he’s never worked with.
Here’s the synopsis: Set in a fictional American desert town circa 1955, the itinerary of a Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention (organised to bring together students and parents from across the country for fellowship and scholarly competition) is spectacularly disrupted by world-changing events.
After spending his last few movies in international lands (The French Dispatch, Isle of Dogs, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Anderson is returning to America for the first time since 2012’s Moonrise Kingdom.
Asteroid City opens in theaters in limited release on June 16th, with a wider rollout on June 23rd.
