‘Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken’ Trailer: A Teenage Girl Learns She’s A Warrior Kraken Queen

Disney scored an Oscar-nominated hit last year with Turning Red, about an adolescent girl who discovers that her emotions turn her into a red, furry beast. Well, Dreamworks Animation, which is coming off the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, has a similar story aimed at young girls with Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.

Featuring the voices of Lana Condor, Tony Collette, and Jane Fonda, the story centers on Ruby, a teenage girl who just wants to fit in at her high school. Making that impossible is the knowledge that she’s actually part of the legendary line of sea krakens, destined to rule the seas.

Also in the voice cast are Annie Murphy, Sam Richardson, Liza Koshy, Will Forte, Colman Domingo, and Jaboukie Young-White.

The film is directed by animation vet Kirk DeMicco, known for The Croods and Vivo. He’s working from a script by Team America: World Police and The Bubble co-writer, Pam Brady.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken opens in theaters on June 30th.

Sixteen-year-old Ruby Gillman learns that she is in the next legendary line of sea krakens. Despite her lofty destiny, she is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High. Ruby struggles even more to fit in when her mother forbids her from going to the beach. After disobeying her mother’s rules, she discovers that she is descended from the warrior Kraken queens and will ascend to the throne as the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas, her grandmother.
