Nowadays it’s good to know when a show has a clear destination. It used to be that shows had no goal in mind other than achieving another season, leading to incomplete stories being told, or very unsatisfying, rushed conclusions. Well, Jon Favreau isn’t steering The Mandalorian to any particular end point. He tells Total Film that the journey for Mando and Grogu has no end in sight…
“No, I don’t – I think the beauty of this is that it’s a middle chapter of a much larger story,” said Favreau. “And though we’ll have resolution over time with these characters, I think that how these characters fit into the larger scope and scale, but it’s not like there’s a finale that we’re building to that I have in mind. Quite the contrary, I love for these stories to go on and on. And so these characters potentially could be with us for a while, and I really love telling stories in their voice, and I love the way the adventures unfold and I’m looking forward to doing much more.”
This could be dangerous. I’m getting flashbacks to Lost and The Walking Dead, two great shows that peaked early, told their stories, and then just kept on going past their prime. Disney and Lucasfilm obviously want to keep the Mandalorian cash cow going as long as possible, but let’s hope they don’t sacrifice the show’s quality to do it.
Then again, Favreau and Dave Filoni are smart guys. There are tons of stories left to tell, and if Mando’s story runs dry, easy avenues for spinoffs.
The Mandalorian season 3 hits Disney+ on March 1st, and season 4 is already written and ready to go.
