Reese Witherspoon has been doing rom-coms for a long time. But now she’s older, she’s a mom, and the kinds of stories she wants to be part of from that genre are different. Enter Your Place or Mine, a Netflix film that Witherspoon sees as something special for the single moms out there.
”‘Your Place Or Mine’ is kind of a love letter to single moms everywhere. Even if your life didn’t perfectly work out the way you envisioned, there’s hope, and there’s joy, and love can still be found,” Witherspoon wrote.
The film finds Witherspoon, also aboard as a producer, co-starring alongside Ashton Kutcher as best friends whose lives are changed when they swap houses for a week. Sometimes it takes stepping into the shoes of another to alter what we think we want out of life.
It’s a story that springs from the mind of writer/director Aline Brosh McKenna in her directorial debut. McKenna’s history of success on the screenplays for The Devil Wears Prada, 27 Dresses, Annie, We Bought a Zoo, Cruella, and more is well-documented. She also created the hit CW series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend with Rachel Bloom, who also has a role here along with Zoe Chao, Jesse Williams, Tig Notaro, and Steve Zahn.
Debbie and Peter are best friends and total opposites. She craves routine with her son in LA; he thrives on change in NY. When they swap houses and lives for a week, they discover what they think they want might not be what they really need.
