Final Cut, the new zombie comedy from The Artist director Michel Hazanavicius, should’ve been part of the Sundance lineup earlier this year. However, the film was pulled when the festival went virtual. It’s arguably ended up in a better spot, anyway, having been announced this morning as part of the Cannes Film Festival slate on the out-of-competition side.
Starring Romain Duris, Bérénice Bejo, Grégory Gadebois, Finnegan Oldfield, Jean-Pascal Zadi, Matilda Lutz, Sébastien Chassagne, Raphaël Quenard, Lyes Salem, and Simone Hazanavicius, the horror-comedy finds a movie crew shooting a zombie movie, only to get attacked by actual zombies. The film is a French remake of the terrific 2017 Japanese movie One Cut of the Dead.
Looks pretty silly, but significantly more enjoyable than Hazanavicius’ last couple of films, The Search and Redoubtable. The filmmaker is known for 2011’s The Artist, the black & white silent film winning the Oscar for Best Picture, and Hazanavicius the award for Best Director. It’s a decision that does NOT hold up to scrutiny, if you ask me.
Final Cut opens in France on June 15th, and will presumably be followed by a U.S. release.
