Back in December, Lucasfilm revealed a gigantic slate of upcoming Star Wars projects for the big and small screen, including spinoffs of The Mandalorian. Oddly enough, not part of those announcements was anything about Gina Carano, whose character Cara Dune was rumored to get her own show, or possibly be part of the newly-announced Rangers of the Republic. With Carano’s firing last night, any plans for the ex-Rebel soldier are kaput, but THR’s Aaron Couch adds a bit of context around what was really going on.

So they were looking for a reason to get rid of Carano long before now. Did nobody stop to tell her to just, I don’t know, shut the fuck up for a while? She may or may not have listened, but at least make the attempt!
I would argue that, despite all of the stupid, nonsensical, false, and hurtful things Carano said before now, they were mostly just a matter of opinion. Dumb opinion, and she got the Twitter schooling she deserved every time she expressed them, but not exactly firable offenses at the time. But when you start dismissing the Holocaust, and couching it in the kind of grievance language that helped inspire the recent violence we’ve seen, you’ve crossed a clear line and deserve to be fired.
Whether this spells doom for whatever that Cara Dune series was going to be, we really don’t know. But there’s speculation all of this stuff with Carano is the reason Sophie Thatcher was brought in a few months ago. Stay tuned.
