Sony Delays Spider-Man Spinoff ‘Morbius’ Until October 2021

Well, it’s happening just as we wrote about hours ago. The major studios aren’t liking what they’re seeing from the continued COVID-19 situation, and are unwilling to risk their big spring and summer films. And the first major shoe to drop is Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff, Morbius, which is being delayed seven months.

Sony has decided to shift Morbius from its March 19th date all the way to October 8th. The film stars Jared Leto as the Spidey antihero, a scientist with a rare blood disease who attempts a dangerous cure that turns him into a strange sort of vampire. Daniel Espinosa directs, with Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson co-starring.

The October date could actually be good if Sony plays up the horror aspects to Halloween audiences. Then again it faces stiff competition on that front from Halloween Kills, which arrives just a week later.

It’s unclear if Sony’s other Marvel films, Venom: Let There Be Carnage on June 25th and Spider-Man 3 in December, will see their dates move as a result of this change.
