The Critics Choice Association, of which I am a longstanding member, revealed the winners of the inaugural Critics Choice Super Awards, celebrating the best of sci-fi, fantasy, action, superhero, horror, and other fan-favorite genre. The event took place last night under COVID-19 protocols, hosted by Kevin Smith and Dani Fernandez, but you can watch the whole thing in its entirety on The CW app and cwtv.com today.
So who were the big winners? The timeloop rom-com Palm Springs and Pixar’s latest Soul topped all films with three wins. On the TV side, Amazon Prime’s The Boys led all with four wins.
Netflix led all distributors with five total wins, stretching across film and TV.
Palm Springs won Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film while stars Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti won for their lead performances. Soul won for Best Animated Movie, while Jamie Foxx and Tina Fey won for their voice acting roles. The Boys won Best Superhero Series, plus a win for Aya Cash’s performance as Stormfront. Antony Starr, who plays the psychotic Homelander on the series, won for both Best Actor and Best Villain, making him the only nominee to win multiple acting awards.
Other victories went to Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, which won for Best Action Movie and Best Actor in an Action Movie for star Delroy Lindo. Betty Gilpin won Best Actress in an Action Movie for her role in the controversial thriller, The Hunt.
On the superhero movie side, Netflix’s The Old Guard was named Best Superhero film of the year, while Birds of Prey‘s Margot Robbie and Ewan McGregor took both of the category’s acting awards.
