When fans were crying out for George Miller to jump right into a Mad Max: Fury Road sequel, he decided to chill for a while and get some distance from the Oscar-winning film. Instead, he announced in 2018 his next film would be his “anti-Mad Max” project, titled Three Thousand Years of Longing. After a couple of years of delays not only is it finally happening, but filming has already begun.
Deadline reports Miller is shooting Three Thousand Years of Longing and is already a third of the way complete. From the beginning, we knew it would star Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton, a duo that promises everyone and their mother is going to want to see this. It also makes the wait for Furiosa a bit more palatable.
Shooting was to have begun in March of this year but…wait, what else was happening around that time? Oh yeah. COVID-19 happened, and so did the shutdowns right around the same time. Numerous safety protocols are said to be in place.
Budgeted at $60M, it’s clear that this isn’t going to be some run-of-the-mill drama. Miller’s producing partner Doug Mitchell says the sets being used are “some of the most spectacular I’ve ever seen” which is saying a lot because, y’know, Fury Road.
With Miller being this far ahead already, the hope is the movie will be ready by September 2021, giving us yet another reason to want this awful year to just hurry up and go away.
