While we expect Hollywood to make a ton of movies on every major current event, COVID-19 makes this a very sensitive issue. We are currently living through this once-in-a-lifetime pandemic, and all of the stress and tragedy that comes with it. Do people really want to watch a movie that not only fictionalizes our reality, but imagines that it gets worse over time? Well, that’s the predicament facing the new thriller Songbird.
Produced by Michael Bay and shot during the pandemic by writer/director Adam Mason, Songbird follows two lovers, played by KJ Apa and Sofia Carson, living in the time of COVID-23, which is a more lethal, more infectious strain. After four years of quarantine, they are desperate to be reunited, and that becomes more pressing when the government targets her as possibly one of the infected.
The trailer is pretty eerie, presenting a view of the pandemic that feels very close to home, but also an authoritarian view of lockdown that the conspiracy theorists out there will absolutely love.
Also in the cast are Craig Robinson, Bradley Whitford, Peter Stormare, Alexandra Daddario, Paul Walter Hauser, and Demi Moore.
Songbird still has no release date, but you know STX will want to strike while the iron is hot. The problem is theaters aren’t open anywhere, and there’s a very real chance that audiences want to stay away from a movie like this right now.
