Are The Addams Family…cool again? The macabre family of characters haven’t been this active in Hollywood since a pair of hit films in the early ’90s, but now after a $200M animated movie with a sequel on the way, the Addams clan is returning to the small screen courtesy of Tim Burton.
Deadline reports Burton will exec-produce and possibly direct every episode of a new The Addams Family series. He’ll be joined in this effort by Smallville creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who know a thing or two about penning stories of unusual teens. Similar to past live-action movies, this Addams Family will be set in the present, bringing all of the culture clash that comes with it, but seen from the perspective of Wednesday Addams.
MGM is shopping the series around to TV and streaming networks, with Netflix looking like a possible home. Makes sense, as they’ve found success with other teen-centric horror shows, such as Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Burton is probably the perfect choice to direct a new version of The Addams Family, given his twisted, darkly comic sensibilities. If you’re wondering if he’s ever worked in TV before…well, yeah, but it’s been a long time. Back in the ’80s he helmed episodes of Shelley Duvall’s Fairie Tale Theatre.
