Leave it to Christopher Nolan to ride to the summer box office’s rescue. The Odyssey, arguably the most anticipated and biggest movie of the year, hit theaters with a splash, earning $124M domestically from 3,919 theaters. That’s a phenomenal $31K per site average for the 3-hour historical epic starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Zendaya, and more. To put this into perspective, the entire box office last weekend was just $126M. Nolan achieved high marks critically, as well. The film has a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the 97% from audiences is the best of his career on the platform. Worldwide, things are even better as the total has hit $264M, the largest global launch of Nolan’s career, an impressive feat.
2. Moana– $19M/$82M
After a soft debut last weekend, Disney’s live-action Moana fell sharply 56%, earning just $19M for $82M domestically after two weeks. Worldwide, the film has only $178M in what has to be considered a disastrous rollout.

After five weeks, Disney/Pixar’s Toy Story 5 has crept up to $958M globally, and should easily surpass $1B. That would make it the third movie in the franchise to do so.
