‘The Bell Jar’: Carey Mulligan Joins Sarah Polley’s Adaptation Of Sylvia Plath’s Classic Novel

Sarah Polley’s adaptation of The Bell Jar is shooting now in Toronto, with Billie Eilish and Heated Rivalry‘s Connor Storrie in the cast. But now Variety is reporting that 3-time Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan has joined them.

According to the report, Mulligan is expected to play Mrs. Greenwood, mother to Eilish’s character, Esther, whose mental illness and bouts with clinical depression mirror those of author Sylvia Plath. My guess is that Storrie is playing Buddy, Esther’s former boyfriend, but nothing is confirmed.

Mulligan can be seen right now in the second season of hit Netflix series, Beef. On the big screen, she recently starred in the charming comedy The Ballad of Wallis Island, and will voice a lead role in Laika’s next animated film, Wildwood. She also has a role in Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew for Netflix.

Focus Features has yet to set a release date for The Belle Jar, but don’t be surprised if it’s in the fall of next year during awards season.
