Typically, when DC movies come to Comic-Con it’s a massive spectacle, a four-quadrant blow out full of superpowers and colorful costumed heroes. Things were a bit different this year with the arrival of Lanterns, a grounded HBO Max crime series featuring Kyle Chandler as Green Lantern icon Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as new recruit, John Stewart.
The new trailer offers another look at the True Detective-esque series, while offering a bit more of when we finally do see the Green Lantern powers emerge. It’s a very cool combination of comic book-style action and police procedural, as Jordan and Stewart investigate a murder in the American heartland.
For instance, how does the Green Lanterns’ archrival Sinestro, played by Ulrich Thomsen, fit into this Earthbound mystery?
Also in the cast are Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Jasmine Cephas Jones, and J. Alphonse Nicholson. Nathan Fillion will reprise his Superman and Peacemaker role as Guy Gardner, because yep, this show fits neatly into James Gunn’s DCU.
Lanterns hits HBO and HBO Max on August 16th.
