‘Werwulf’ Trailer: Robert Eggers Brings Another Classic Horror Monster To The Holidays

Is this going to be Robert Eggers’ thing now? Bringing a different classic movie monster to the holiday season? Nosferatu already made Christmas bloody a couple of years ago, and now he’s back with Werwulf, another period horror arriving like a gift under the tree.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, and Willem Dafoe star in Werwulf, all of them having worked with Eggers previously on Nosferatu. This time around, the story moves from Transylvania to a small community in 13th-century England terrorized by a mysterious creature and haunted by folklore.

The script is by Eggers and Sjón, who previously collaborated on The Northman. Sjón also co-wrote Lamb, which is the most Eggers-like folk horror you’ll see that’s not directed by Eggers.

Since Eggers moved to Focus Features, his profile has been upped significantly, and so have the box offices. Nosferatu was his highest-grossing film yet at over $180M, and Werwulf could meet or surpass that.

SYNOPSIS: Witness Robert Eggers’ most visceral and haunting experience yet. Focus Features presents WERWULF, a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within.

Werwulf hits theaters on Christmas Day!
