- Toy Story 5– $70M/$297.2M
Pixar’s Toy Story 5 fell 56% in its second week, but still managed a sizable $70M to lead the weekend. After two weeks, the film is already Pixar’s 8th highest-grossing domestically with $297M. Worldwide, it’s already at $585M and well on its way to passing the $1B mark.
2. Supergirl (review)- $38M
The thinkpieces heralding the “death” of superhero movies are already written thanks to the weak $38M debut of Supergirl. The second film in James Gunn’s DCU following last year’s Superman, it actually came in below expectations, and managed just $68M worldwide. It’s so rare for a big budget superhero movie to do a number this low, that it would be irresponsible of Gunn and DC Studios to not reexamine the strategy going forward. While I was mildly positive on it, critics mostly killed it, holding it at just 56% on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences were more positive at 76%, but even that is pretty low and suggests a movie that didn’t really connect with anyone. Unfortunate, because Milly Alcock is very good as Supergirl and she seems to be the one thing people had good things to say about.
3. Obsession– $9.8M/$233.9M
4. Jackass: Best and Last (review)- $8.4M
The fifth and final movie in the franchise, Jackass: Best and Last had the worst start of them all with just $8.4M. To be fair, Johnny Knoxville reunited the gang for what amounts to a highlight reel and walk down a poop-filled memory lane, so perhaps that’s part of what kept longtime fans away this time.
5. Disclosure Day– $8.1M/$94.3M
6. Backrooms– $4.3M/$184.1M
7. Scary Movie– $3M/$103.5M
8. Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War-TheCalamity– $3M/
9. Masters of the Universe– $2.2M/$61.9M
10. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu– $1.6M/$175.2M
