The seventh movie in the Despicable Me franchise, Minions & Monsters opened with a franchise low $36.4M weekend, $61.4M over the 5-day holiday. It might be easy to think that audiences have started to grow bored of the yellow sidekicks’ hijinks, but July 4th festivities combined with extreme heat warnings throughout the east coast likely played a big role. Worldwide, things are rosier as the film has $160M and that should go up significantly over the coming weeks as Toy Story 5 loses steam. Overall, critics have hailed this as arguably the best of the series. It has 91% critical on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences have it at 75%.
2. Toy Story 5– $31M/$366.3M
After just three weeks, Pixar’s Toy Story 5 has $766M globally and should easily surpass the $1B mark.
3. Young Washington (review)- $20.8M
Americans felt patriotic over the July 4th weekend, and Angel Studios’ historical biopic Young Washington reaped the benefits with $20.8M. The film, about the early years of our first President was given lukewarm response by critics, just 60% on RT, but 92% from audiences.
4. Supergirl– $9.6M/$58.5M
Box office was kryptonite to Supergirl as it suffered a massive 74% drop from last week, earning just $9.6M for $58M domestic. Oof. On the “plus” side, it quietly crossed $100M worldwide, but seems unlikely to go much further. The issues behind-the-scenes are well-documented at this point, and what remains now is to see how this impacts James Gunn and DC Studios in the future.

6. Obsession– $5.3M/$245.3M
Unquestionably, the biggest hit of the year is Focus Features’ acclaimed horror, Obsession, which has now surpassed $400M worldwide on a budget of roughly $750K. This is a movie that has beaten huge superhero movies, Steven Spielberg summer blockbusters, and even Star Wars. You’d think studios would take the hint.
