Green Lantern has been something of a pariah for every filmmaker looking to build a DC cinematic universe. The notoriously awful 2010 movie with Ryan Reynolds lingers large, so much so that Zack Snyder didn’t dare even approach the character with the DCEU. But all of that is changing under the guidance of James Gunn, who is offering a more grounded take on the intergalactic space force, as seen in the new trailer for HBO series, Lanterns.
The new Lanterns footage confirms something we had heard about last year, and that’s the casting of Oscar nominee Laura Linney in an unknown role. She joins stars Kyle Chandler as Green Lantern Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre as Green Lantern John Stewart, plus Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry.
Also in the cast are Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen co-star, with Nicole Ari Parker, Jason Ritter, Paul Ben-Victor, and Sherman Augustus recurring. Nathan Fillion will reprise his Superman role as arrogant Green Lantern, Guy Gardner.
Created by Damon Lindelof, Tom King, and showrunner Chris Mundy, the show “follows experienced Lantern Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart as they investigate a murder in Nebraska, which leads them to darker mysteries and reckonings.”
Lanterns hits HBO and HBO Max on August 16th.
