The truth is out there, and Hulu wants in. Ryan Coogler’s much-talked-about X-Files reboot is a go at Disney’s Hulu where it has received a pilot order. The series will star Danielle Deadwyler, with Jennifer Yale (The Copenhagen Test) as showrunner.
Coogler will write and direct the pilot episode, which will focus on two sharply contrasting FBI agents tasked with investigating unexplained phenomena. Of course, one will be a believer in the paranormal, the other a fierce skeptic. The formula was established with Chris Carter’s long-running predecessor that ran from 1993-2002 and starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
Deadwyler broke out with her charismatic performance in The Harder They Fall, which was followed by a powerful turn as Mamie Elizabeth Till-Mobley in Till and another in The Piano Lesson.
It’ll be interesting to see where Coogler plans to take his version of The X-Files. Conspiracy theories are as much a part of our world as ever, and talk of extraterrestrials has picked up in recent days thanks to comments by Barack Obama and the current White House occupant. But you can’t tackle the alien mystery in the same way now as before, and that’s what I’m curious to get a look at.
Once Coogler is done with The X-Files, he’ll move on to Black Panther 3, as he confirmed last November.
