Remember that Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots movie Vin Diesel attached himself to way back in 2021? Well, not only will he star in and produce the film based on the Mattel boxing toy, but now he’s going to write it, too!
Deadline reports on Diesel taking over as writer of Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots, which will bring the characters Red Rocker and Blue Bomber to life on the silver screen. Previously, Rampage writer Ryan Engle was on the screenplay, but it seems that didn’t work out? And somebody thought Diesel, who has only written sparingly over the years, would be the best choice to replace him.
Robbie Brenner, President of Mattel Studios and Chief Content Officer, said… “Vin is a powerhouse storyteller with an unmatched understanding of action, heart, and world-building. His creative vision for Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots is bold, human, and deeply cinematic—exactly the kind of storytelling we love at Mattel Studios.”
People forget that one of Diesel’s earliest projects was as writer, director, and star of the 1997 crime drama, Strays. Oh wait, nobody saw it so I guess that doesn’t count as forgetting.
The story reportedly will center on a father who, along with his son, forms an unlikely bond with an advanced war machine. This is literally the plot of Real Steel.
Diesel said about the news, “I am excited to expand the Mattel universe by bringing this classic toy from my childhood to a modern audience by telling a story that examines the role of competition in a world often measured by strength and dominance that dares to reveal the power of compassion at its core.”
How long before Diesel just decides to direct it himself, too?
